The Gavin Foundation Tony Barila, Hub Foundation, has asked to share his own personal tragedy in hopes that others can learn from his loss. Barila’s son, Jeff, was only 12 years old when he developed an onset of Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder (OCD). He managed to "fight" his horrible affliction and graduated from Roger Williams University in Rhode Island in 2005, becoming a successful real estate broker in the Boston area. About 10 years ago, Jeff became a heavy drinker and very quickly before his 37 birthday, Jeff died of an apparent accidental overdose of fentanyl. About four months before Jeff became a severe alcoholic. Two days th died, he met with two therapists from the Gavin Foundation in South Boston, an organization that a s s i s t s membe r s of soc i e ty overcome substance abuse. He thought that they had the right approach and was very interested in following their program. Tony believes that if only Jeff had been a part of the Gavin Foundation years or even months earlier, he would have been strong enough to continue with his fight to sobriety. Recently, the national mindset DFI is a cooperating partner in the Pile 20 Annual Design and Installation of Cost-Efficient Piles (DICEP) Conference scheduled for November 5–6, 2019, in Cleveland, Ohio. Held each fall since 2000, this exclusive PDCA program presents modern approaches to maximize and promote the increased use of driven piles through a series of engineering-focused presentations. The theme of this year’s DICEP conference is “Deep Foundations, Earth Retention and the Benefits of the Driven Pile.” Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with your peers, collaborate on industry research and strengthen your commitment to the driven pile profession. Driving Contractors Association (PDCA) th and discussion about substance abuse has shifted from being the result of a character flaw to one whose basis is a disease. Removing this traditional social stigma reflects a positive step in improving diagnosis and treatment, however, significant work remains. The fight is too real and personal to be unaffected; this epidemic has fallen on all of us.
