American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has published LRFD Tunnel Design and Construction Guide Specifications, which is available on its website at https:// bookstore.transportation.org/. The specifications are intended for the design, evaluation and rehabilitation of road tunnels constructed using cut-and-cover, bored, mined and immersed tunnel construction methodologies. A literature search was performed to review existing design codes and standards, project- specific design criteria, reports and technical publications. Limited calibration of the load factors was performed based on results from the analysis of a circular bored tunnel. The Guide Specifications are the result of a five-year research effort by WSP USA performed under a task order from the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). GEI Consultants was awarded the 2017 Silver Engineering Excellence Award in April by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) for work on the Gay Head Lighthouse Relocat ion project in Aquinnah, Mass. GEI was engaged by the Town of Aquinnah to provide geotechnical engineering services to assist in relocating the Gay Head Lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard, which stood less than 50 ft (15 m) from the edge of eroding bluffs. The community raised $3.4 million through 122 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • SEPT/OCT 2017 fundraising and charity events, to move the lighthouse to safety. The engineering team worked against time and an impending hurricane season, and applied innovative methods to save this historical structure. Gay Head Lighthouse In the June issue of the TreviGroup Journal, Trevi reported that the five waterways that control the water flow into Mosul Dam in Iraq were open in May 2017 for the first time in 12 years. Since the water supply lake is now at its highest level since 2005, the 2,625 ft (800 m) long spillway is back in action to help control a reservoir of more than 388.5 billion cu ft (11 billion cu m) due to its discharge capacity of more than 3.4 million gallon/sec (13,000 cu m/sec). After seven months of repairs, the massive Mosul Dam was saved from impending disaster. The extensive drilling and grouting treatment being performed by Trevi continues at a steady pace and there are no significant signs of distress despite the high level of water. Restoration of the bottom outlet and maintenance of the tunnel structures were carried out simul- taneously with grouting, and now all of the dam mechanisms for water inflow control are operational. When equipped with the short mast, it has a transport/operation weight of
