DFI Journal The latest issue of the DFI Journal — Volume 10, Issue 2 — is devoted to the results of the Bored Pile/Drilled Shaft (BPDS) Synthesis Project. This project, endorsed by the DFI Drilled Shaft Committee, was the brainchild of James Johnson, trustee liaison to the committee. Johnson thought that DFI members in Europe and North America would benefit from a better understanding of the similarities and differences between the states of practice of bored piles in Europe and drilled shafts in North America. The BPDS Synthesis Project was led by a task force that agreed Topic Design QA/QC to examine five aspects of subtopics of the DSBP industry: Design, Construction, Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC), Innovative Technologies and Trends and Procurement Methods. Each of these subtopics were examined by a pair of authors, one with a strong knowledge of North American practice and a counterpart with a strong knowledge of European practice. To assist in developing these comparisons, a survey was developed that was distributed to members of DFI, ADSC (International Association of Foundation Drilling) and EFFC (European Federation of Foundation Contractors). The following table shows the author pairs that were developed: North American author Dr. Dan Brown, D.GE., P.E. (Tennessee) Construction Dr. Antonio Marinucci, P.E., M.B.A. Vince Jue (Italy) (Rhode Island) Innovation Ray Fassett (California) Bernie Hertlein, FACI (Illinois) Gerald Verbeek (Netherlands) Dr. Michael Arnold (Germany) Procurement David Coleman, P.E., (New York) Arthur Tipter, Dipl. Ing. (Germany) The DFI editors are certain that these papers will be informative and valuable to DFI members.
