Technical committee meetings were well attended. Trustee James Johnson with OPA recipients Robert Gianna, PCL Civil Constructors; Mike Batten and Beth Howey, HDR Legends Award Program Every four years, DFI and the DFI Edu- cational Trust honor three practitioners — an engineer, contractor and manufacturer/ supplier — that have made significant contributions and advancements to the research, design, construction, manufac- turing and use of deep foundations. The Legends Award Program took place on Thursday, October 17, during the Conference, where Dr. Thomas Bauer, past chairman of the supervisory board, BAUER Group, was presented the Manufacturer/ Supplier Legend; Thomas J. Wysockey, chairman emeritus, Thatcher Foundations (posthumously), was presented the Contractor Legend (Dr. Michael Wysockey received the award in honor of his father); and Dr. Bengt H. Fellenius, former professor WiDF grant winners with Tracy Brettmann, chair of the DFI Educational Trust of civil engineering, University of Ottawa, was presented with the Engineering Legend. Trustee and Committee Activities Preconference activities included the DFI Board of Trustees meeting (see page 31), Technical Committee and Working Group meetings, the Women in Deep Foundations Committee (WiDF) networking reception, and a Lunch & Learn Workshop focused on helping people communicate better verbally. Throughout the week, each of the DFI management and technical committees and working groups (33 in total) met during the conference to discuss their many and varied projects, administrative issues, publications and events. DFI Business DFI leaders conducted the Business Meeting Luncheon on Thursday, October 17, includ- ing an overview by DFI President Matthew Janes, M.B.A., P.Eng., Isherwood Associates, of DFI’s healthy financial state, accomplish- ments and undertakings in 2019. A video, available on DFI’s YouTube channel, was shown highlighting the activities of DFI Technical Committees and Regional Chap- ters since the last annual conference. New Technical Committee chairs were introduced, and outgoing chairs were thanked for their dedication and service (see details on page 73). Matthew Janes presented four Pres- ident’s Awards at the luncheon. This award is given at the discretion of the DFI President to recognize the efforts and service of DFI members to advance the DEEP FOUNDATIONS • NOV/DEC 2019 • 25
