In September 2008, Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario that was created to improve coordination and integration of transportation, launched a regional transportation plan called “The Big Move.” This 25-year, $50 billion (CND) plan for coordinated and integrated transportation and public transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas opened up a myriad of opportunities for deep foundations contractors, including the excavation support and foundation work for the new Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit line, a $9.1 billion project and the largest single transit expansion in Toronto. SPECIAL ISSUE : P R O J E C T S SPECIAL ISSUE : P R O J E C T S 94 Foundation Design of the Abraham Lincoln Bridge Dan Yang, P.E., P.Eng., Yu Zhang, P.E., and Sam Christie, P.E., G.E., The new Abraham Lincoln Bridge, previously known as the Ohio River Bridges Downtown Crossing, is a three- tower, cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River connecting downtown Louisville, Ky., to Jeffersonville, Ind. The construction and design contract was awarded through the design-build selection process. The design-build team encountered several unique challenges. However, close collaboration between the geotechnical and structural designers and the contractor resulted in an innovative, cost-effective design that provided the owner the most desirable technical solution delivered on time and on budget. 103 Bored Pile/Drilled Shaft Synthesis Project: An Overview Alan Macnab, D.GE, P. Eng. The Bored Pile/Drilled Shaft (BP/DS) Synthesis Project, endorsed by the DFI Drilled Shaft Committee, is a comparison of the state of practice for drilled shafts (called bored piles in Europe) in the European Union (EU) and North America (NA). This article provides an overview of the project task force, the challenges of the project and the findings, which are written about in significant detail in four articles in the DFI Journal, Volume 10, Issue 2.
