The Bond Zone The International Society for Micropiles (ISM), in alliance with ADSC and DFI, continues to serve as the international center of knowledge for micropile technology. The group was organized 20 years ago, when a core group of international representatives involved in research, development, and the design and construction of micropiles came together to peer review Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) state-of-the-practice study on micropiles. The original mandate of the group was to develop and disseminate information on design and construction of micropiles. As micropile design and educational tools became established, the ISM’s mission focused on transferring micropile technology across the globe. ISM has hosted 12 international workshops, most recently in June 2014 in Krakow, Poland. New Leadership In Krakow, ISM’s chairman, Allen Cadden, P.E., D.GE, of Schnabel Engineering, stepped down from his position. Cadden served as ISM chair since 2009, and through his vision and leadership the ISM-ADSC-DFI alliance was realized in 2011. Cadden’s dedicated service and commitment contributed greatly to the vitality and continued success of ISM. Jim Bruce, P.Eng., of Geo- Jim Bruce, new ISM Chair Foundations Contractors, Inc., will serve as the new ISM chair. Bruce is a professional engineer licensed in four Canadian provinces. Beginning in 1995, he has spent his entire career with Geo-Foundations, a subsidiary of Hayward Baker Canada, Ltd. Aside from his passion and enthusiasm for micropiles, Bruce specializes in jet grouting, post-tensioned rock anchors and hot bi tumen grouting. He lives with his wife Cindy and 12-year-old son, Haden, in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. An international steering committee governs the activities and strategic direction of ISM. The committee originally comprised representatives from each founding member country, including Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, the U.S. and the U.K. Long-standing members Roger Frank (France), Horst Aschenbroich (Canada), the late Ernst Ischebeck (Germany) and Masao Sagara (Japan) stepped down at the Krakow meeting. New committee members include Allan Herse (Piling and Civil Australia), Andreas Brandner (IB-Brandner, Austria), Nadir Ansari (Canada), and Bjoern Ischebeck (Ischebeck TITAN, Germany).
