Using two construction site examples, this article describes how drones are helping capture and replicate site specifics in detail to improve project workflows. Drone data can provide accurate models that promote project safety by reducing human exposure to unstable sites and by making visual site reviews for potential hazards easier to do, as well as improve deliverables by generating data in information-rich formats to inform project oversight and design decisions, and to reduce site visits and logistical costs. DEEP FOUNDATIONS • MAY/JUNE 2020 • 3 16 Holograms to Mitigate Risks COVER STORY ® Scott A. Anderson, Ph.D., P.E., Benjamin S. Rivers, P.E., Silas Nichols, P.E., and Derrick D. Dasenbrock, P.E., D.GE Unknown geotechnical conditions are a major source of risk. Using 3D-augmented reality, diverse project stakeholders can discuss real subsurface data in real space and visualize where measurements are taken, what those values indicate, and where pockets of unknowns exist that can heighten risk. In this article, learn how holographic models enhance project management and potentially reduce risks by paving the way to better communication and more thoughtfully designed investigations.
