Marcel Bielefeld and Gerald Verbeek For many decades, the standard penetration test (SPT) has been the most commonly performed in-situ soil investigation test, where the results have been used in various engineering applications. Since the 1980s, the cone penetration test (CPT) has become increasingly used, as its capabilities have advanced. The authors present a case of why it may be time to use more advanced techniques, such as the CPT, for soil characterization. DEEP FOUNDATIONS • MAY/JUNE 2019 • 5 85 Drilled Shaft Quality Assurance Tools: Interpretation and Impact Jon Sinnreich, P.E.; Greg Canivan, P.E.; and Robert Simpson Various methods are used for quality assurance for drilled shafts QA but have produced data that was ambiguous or even contradictory. The authors present and discuss multiple examples of quality assurance methods that are used in drilled shafts and how the observations, measurements, and/or load testing can be utilized into a proper analysis. SPECIAL ISSUE : 93 Pile Testing — Anomalies, Flaws and Defects Joram M. Amir, Ph.D., C.E., D.GE. The deep foundations industry has not developed consensus protocol for the interpretation of test results and associated acceptance criteria, which has resulted in unnecessary friction, conflict and litigation. The author discusses the differences among anomaly, flaw and defect, and provides practical examples of each. C N E A & R V U E S R S I A F I Y C T A I T L I A O U N Q
