Fantaye, P.E., Dimitrios Iliadelis, P.E. and David P. Sposito, P.E. Construction of a new emergency vent plant was required for the upgrade of a subway ventilation system. Secant piles installed to top of bedrock had been suggested for both excavation support and groundwater control. However, an alternate support of excavation and groundwater control system consisting of secant piles and a permeation grout curtain wall was implemented as part of a value- engineered solution. 103 Applied Seismic Tools for Geotechnical Site Characterization Erick Baziw and Gerald Verbeek Geotechnical site characteriza- tion is an essential requisite for the design of deep foundation elements. In this article, various seismic tools to perform this work are discussed. 111 Risks in Ground Engineering Arthur Tipter, Sr., P.E. The author provides an insight into design-based risks on ground engineering projects. These types of risk must be identified and mitigated throughout a project from concept through completion through open dialog between the client, contractor and design team. 100 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 0 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 Average Rock Hardness (MPa) DEEP FOUNDATIONS • MAY/JUNE 2018 • 5 70 80 90 100 Production Rate (% per operational hour)
