Technical sessions load tests during his tenure. Following the Osterberg Lecture, the DFI Ben C. Gerwick Award for Innovation in Design and Construction of Marine Foundations was presented to Akio Kitamura of Giken, who is the inventor of the Silent Piler, and is being recognized for trailblazing the field of the press-in piling technology. Executive Directior Anthony Bertrams translated while Osamu Kusakabe, president of the International Press-in Association, delivered the lecture titled Basics of Press-in Piling. Following the Osterberg and Gerwick Lectures, there was a panel discussion on risk, which was a continuation and follow presenters. In total, IFCEE 2018 provided more than 110 hours of education through technical sessions, short courses, panel sessions and lectures. The ADSC Michael W. O’Neill Lecture Award is presented triennially at each IFCEE for outstanding contributions to the advancement of state of the practice in the design and construction of deep foun- dations through practical, applied research and/or through recommended improve- ments to design and/or construction methodologies. On Wednesday, March 7, the second O’Neill Lecture Award was presented to Clyde Baker, P.E., D.GE, M.ASCE, of GEI Consultants, Inc. Baker delivered his presentation, An Inconvenient Geotechnical Truth, reflecting on the primary points learned during his 60+ years of foundation design and construction experience, which were illustrated by several well-known case histories ranging from Chicago to Kuala Lumpur. Bubba Knight of Loadtest and Jack Hayes On Thursday, March 8, the DFI Oster- berg Lecture was delivered by John A. (Jack) Hayes, P. Eng., D.I.C., founder and former president of Loadtest, who was recognized for his pioneering work with the Osterberg cell (O-cell) load tests and for having carried out more than 1,000 O-cell bi-directional October 2017 at the DFI 42 Annual Confer- ence on Deep Foundations in New Orleans. This Invited Panel on Risk – A Rational Discussion was moderated by DFI President Dr. Dan Brown, P.E., D.GE, Dan Brown and Associates, and was intended to gather engineers, contractors, equipment and material suppliers, researchers and owners together for a rational discussion about risk as related to foundation projects. The objec- tive of the panel discussion was to empha- size the importance of clearly identifying and allocating risk during tender phase so that risk can be mitigated by parties best positioned to manage them and risks that become realities can be addressed fairly. The format for the 90-minute session was a series of very brief presentations by the panelists who represented various perspectives followed by a facilitated discussion/Q&A with the audience. In addition, the session was broadcast as a live webinar for those unable to attend the IFCEE conference in person. The panelists for this session were: up to the initial discussion that was held in nd Anna Sellountou, PDI and Clyde Baker 32 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • MAY/JUNE 2018 Anthony Bertrams, Akio Kitamura and Rick Ellman
