See You at SuperPile ’17 SuperPile ’17 is just weeks away, from June 14-16 at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort, outside San Diego. The event focuses on the latest developments in augered cast-in-place/drilled displacement piles, drilled shafts, driven piles, ground improvement, helical piles and tiebacks, marine foundations, micropiles, testing and evaluation of foundation systems, and seismic and lateral loads, as well as safety issues. Proceeds from the event benefit the WiDF Committee, established in 2015 to encourage women and men to be advocates for retaining women in the deep foundations industry. The goal of the committee is to foster success and interest for professional women working in all aspects of deep foundations by promoting networking events, supporting outreach activities and building mentoring relationships. Gerwick Award The 2017 winner of the Ben C. Gerwick Award for Innovation in the Design and Construction of Marine Foundations is Robert B. Bittner, P.E., a past DFI president and president of Bittner-Shen Consulting Engineers. He is being recognized for his 46- year career and body of work in the marine foundations industry. The focus of Bittner’s work has been on minimizing construction costs through the design and development of innovative methods and equipment for marine construction projects, which have been employed on the construction of major bridges, immersed tube tunnels, ocean outfalls and intakes, marine terminals, offshore structures, and locks and dams worldwide. The award is being presented on June 15 after the luncheon, which features a presentation by Bittner. The award recognizes the innovative spirit of Ben C. Gerwick and his phenomenal contribution to the marine foundation industry over his 62-year professional career as a contractor, educator and construction engineer.
