DFI Special Session at International Bridge Conference DFI has organized a special session on foundations and a dedicated foundations exhibi- tion area at the International Bridge Conference (IBC) — June 6-10 in National Harbor, Md. The Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP) annual conference is dedicated to bridge design and construc- tion and is attended by owners, structural engineers, and engi- neering and construction service providers in the international bridge industry. The dedicated exhibit area, organized by DFI — with cooperation from the International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC), Geo-Institute of ASCE and the Pile Driving Contractors Association (PDCA) — provides key benefits to foundations-related engineers; contractors; and manufacturer, equipment and service providers. • Increased participation from foundations-related companies in IBC. • Wider exposure and networking opportunities with structural engineers, contractors and owners. • Opportunities for foundations-related industry members to showcase technical capabilities and resources that promote quality, safety, sustainability and durability of bridge foundations while reducing project risk. • Information transfer for innovative technologies and challenging foundation projects that enhance bridge cost economy and constructability through special technical session. • Focused attention on foundations service providers. The special technical session on foundations, on Thursday, June 9, from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m., includes the following presentations: • “Foundation Engineering Revisited to Reduce Bridge Construction Risk” – Paul Axtell and Nathan Glinski, Dan Brown and Associates; and Mike Lopez of TY Lin International • “Foundation Design of Ohio River Downtown Crossing Under Design-Build Realm” – Dan Yang, Yu Zhang and Sam Christie, Buckland & Taylor | COWI North America • “The Virginia Route 340 Bridges: Challenges for Foundations in Karst Terrain and the Importance of Coordination During Design and Construction” – James Sheahan and Michael Mo, HDR Engineering; and Chaz Weaver, Virginia DOT • “Tellico Canal in Loudon County, Tennessee” – Mark R. Madgett, Seaboard Foundations COMPACTION GROUTING SERVICES, INC 888-440-6606 • www.cgsinc.net DEEP FOUNDATIONS • MAY/JUNE 2016 • 51 Compaction Grouting • Micropiles Soil Nails • Shotcrete • Slabjacking • “Augered Cast-in-Place Piles for Bridge Foundation Support” – W. Morgan NeSmith, Berkel & Company Contractors • “Lateral Resistance of Abutment Piles Near MSE Walls” – Kyle Rollins, Brigham Young University The session will highlight how collaboration between structural, geotechnical and construction practitioners provides high-value foundation solutions and allows logistical, contractual, technical and changed conditions challenges to be met effectively on high-profile bridge projects.
