DFI Educational Trust Update Langan and O’Malley Funds to Award Scholarships in 2015 The recently-established Langan Engineer- ing & Environmental Services Legacy Scholarship Fund will make its first disbursement in 2015 by awarding $15,000 in scholarships. The scholarships will benefit civil and environmental engineering students at Purdue University, NYU/ Polytechnic School of Engineering, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Application criteria and procedures are currently being developed and will be announced shortly. The John O’Malley Scholarship Fund will award $5,000 in 2015. The fund will award scholarships each year to undergraduate civil engineering students from any accredited college or university who have financial need and an interest in the deep foundations industry. Donors wishing to contribute to either of these funds can do so at www.dfitrust.org by clicking on the “Donate” tab and then selecting their fund of choice from the donor form drop down menu. There is still time to receive special recognition as an original Founding Donor of the O’Malley Fund by making a contri- bution of $1,000 or more by August 1, 2015. Wysockey Scholarship Fund- raising Dinner will be held on July 16, at the Union League Club of Chicago. The fund honoring Thomas J. Wysockey, chairman emeritus of Thatcher Foundations Inc., was established in June 2014 with a generous donation of $50,000 received from Thatcher Foundations which is part of a pledge from the company totaling $100,000. Special guest speaker is Joseph G. Burns, P.E., S.E., CEng, FAIA, RIBA, LEED AP, managing principal, Thornton Tomasetti. Burns is a passionate advocate for deeper integration of architecture and engi- neering, which he promotes through technical innovation in the design of structural systems, collaboration in practice and leadership in building science education. The Wysockey Fund provides financial awards to civil engineering students who are pursuing a career in the deep foundations industry. The second scholarship will be awarded in 2015. Osterberg Lecture and Gerwick Award Presented at IFCEE 2015 The Osterberg Lecture was delivered on March 19 by Frank Rausche, Ph.D., P.E., of GRL Engineers, during the International Foundations Congress and Equipment Expo (IFCEE) held at the JW Marriott Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Rausche gave a comprehensive presentation on the history and advancements in the field of load testing methods over the last 50 years. He was introduced to the large audience by Ray Wood, executive vice president of Loadtest. The company has sponsored the lecture since 2009 and provide a donation to the Trust’s general fund annually in honor of Dr. Jorj O. Osterberg, inventor of the Osterberg Cell (O-Cell) Test. Dr. Rausche follows past lecturers Clyde Baker, Bengt Fellenius, John Schmertmann, Dan Brown, Jean-Louis Briaud and Kyle Rollins. M. Byrl Williams, Chair [email protected] On March 20, the Ben C. Gerwick Award for Innovation in Design and Construction of Marine Foundations was pre- sented to Proserve for the development of the Proserve Grout Bag. Rick Ellman, principal at Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers and chairman of DFI’s Marine Foundations Committee, gave a brief history of the establishment of this award in honor of Gerwick’s 62-year career in the marine foundations industry before intro- ducing Martin Hawkswood B.Sc., C.Eng., M.I.C.E. M.I.Struct.E., who accepted the award on behalf of Proserve. Hawkswood gave a presentation on the varied uses of grout bags in marine construction and fielded audience questions on this innovative system.
