Hayward Baker also recently completed remediation work on the Lake Manatee Dam located in Manatee County south of Tampa, Fla. The nearly 50-year-old dam, constructed of sandy soils with a clay core, serves as a freshwater reservoir for 300,000 area residents. The scope of the remediation work ultimately consisted of a 3,300 ft (1,006 m) long, nominal 2 ft (.61 m) thick cutoff wall to maximum depths of 105 ft (32 m) below the current crest elevation. The cutoff wall required a minimum of 5 ft (1.5 m) embedment into a deep underlying low permeable clay layer. Cascade Drilling released its 2014 annual sustainability report, marking the launch of its Corporate Sustainability Program (CSP). The report provides a baseline for further development of a robust CSP. Milhouse Engineering & Construction announced the acquisition of Chicago- based Zroka Engineering, a woman-owned structural engineering consulting and design firm. Atlas Copco launched a new intelligent compaction system that gives contractors real-time material stiffness readings to ensure superior soil and asphalt compaction during World of Asphalt in Baltimore. The system uses a global navigation satellite system, such as GPS, to track the number of completed passes and a drum-mounted accelerometer to measure the surface’s relative material stiffness. The system is available on Atlas Copco CC2200 through CC6200 asphalt rollers and CA2500 through CA6500 soil rollers.
