He was a monu- mental figure in Swedish geotechnical engineering. died on January 8, 2018, r d Within his area of expertise, ground treatment and piled foundations, he was recognized as a world leader and part of an international network of experts, with whom he generously shared his ideas. According to his colleagues, he was a superb researcher and scientist, innovative and bold in his approach to the solution of problems, always with a positive attitude, especially encouraging younger colleagues. After graduating from Chalmers University of Technology, he was offered a research position at the Swedish Geotec- hnical Institute, where he conducted his groundbreaking research on vertical drains, for which he was awarded a doctoral degree. Hansbo became the first professor in geotechnical engineering in Sweden and established the geotechnical department at Chalmers. Hansbo was chairman of the Swedish Geotechnical Society (Svenska Geotekniska Föreningen, SGF) for eight years and vice chairman of the Swedish Construction Association (Sveriges Byggindustrier) for five years. In recognition of his many contributions to geotechnical engineering, Hansbo was made an honorary member of prize. In connection with his 90 birthday, SGF established the “Sven Hansbo” prize acknowledging his outstanding contribu- tions to Swedish geotechnical engineering. SGF and was awarded the SGF honorary th president, but continues to serve the company as a senior consultant in GEI’s West Region, focusing on client develop- ment and succession planning. Palmieri joined GEI in 2010 to lead the startup of GEI’s Midwest Region, where he served as regional manager and managed the rapid growth and integration of the region into GEI. In 2013, he was named chief operating officer and played an instrumental role in leading the firm to successive years of growth and profitability, culminating with the firm reaching its highest annual revenue and number of employees in its history. Palmieri earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an MBA from the Charles H. Kellstadt Graduate School at DePaul University. He has more than 30 years of consulting and client management experience in geotechnical and pavement engineering and construc- tion services, as well as operational leadership and management, strategic planning, and risk management. GZA announced that Heather Audet, P.E., and Darin Goodwin, M.P.H., CHMM, RBP, have joined the company as senior project managers. Audet has nearly 20 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and heavy underground design. Her recent experi- ence includes working as G E I C o n s u l t a n t s announced that Ron Palmieri, P.E., was selec- ted by the board of directors to assume the role of president and chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2018, becoming the third (non-founder) president in GEI’s 48-year history. Raymond Hart, P.E., G.E., stepped down after five years as GEI’s an assistant project manager for the Black River Tunnel in Lorain, Ohio, and project manager for the Riverbed St. Pump Station in Cleveland, Ohio. Audet will now focus on public transportation projects. She received a B.S. degree in ocean engineering and an M.S. degree in civil engineering from Florida Institute of Technology. Audet is a licensed Professional Engineer in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, and is a member of ASCE and Women in Transportation. PEOPLE & COMPANIES Goodwin is responsible for providing a broad range of industrial hygiene and occupational safety assistance and expertise to GZA clients across a wide range of client sectors and regulatory program areas. Prior to joining GZA, Goodwin was the environmental safety program manager and emergency preparation coordinator at the Miriam Hospital, Lifespan in East Providence, R.I. He received a B.S. degree in physics from Bridgewater State University and a M.P.H. degree from Boston University. Goodwin is a Certified Hazardous Mater ial Manager and Registered Biosafety Professional. He is a former co-chair for Massachusetts Bi o t e chno l o g y Counc i l ; S a f e t y, Environment and Facilities Committee. Thoma s Thomann, Ph.D., P.E., was promoted to senior principal and shareholder of GeoDesign, joining founders Ted von Rosenvinge, P.E., and Ulrich LaFosse, P.E. He received a B.S. in civil engineering from Manhattan College, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering with a geotechnical concentration from the University of Michigan. Thomann leads the metro New York consulting practice, and provides geotechnical, geostructural and earthquake engineering services for major buildings and bridges. Some current and recent projects include Essex Crossing, The Eleventh and 25 Park Row in Manhattan, Jersey City Waterfront and Domino Sugar in Brooklyn. He al so per formed geotechnical earthquake engineering for the new Tappan Zee Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge and the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Thomann is a registered Professional Engineer in several states, has authored more than a dozen technical publications, and is a member of DFI, ASCE and the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering.
