EDUCATIONAL TRUST First Manuel Fine Scholarships The Trust awarded the first Manuel Fine Civil Engi- neering Scholarships to Patrick Marquis, a graduate student pursuing an M.S. in civil engineering at the University of Toronto, and Daniel Currie, an under- graduate civil engineering student at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON, Canada. The scholarship awards are $2,000 each. The Manuel Fine Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund was established in 2013 with generous donations from Bermingham Foundat ion Solut ions, the Heavy Construction Association of Ontario, the Heavy Construction Association of Toronto and the Ontario Association of Foundation Specialists. The fund honors Manuel (Manny) Fine, who served DFI for 24 years in many roles, including trustee, president, executive director, managing editor of Deep Foundations magazine, and in recent years, as publisher of the DFI Journal. The fund will provide scholarships only for civil engineering students attending universities in the Province of Ontario. Langan Scholarships The Trust awarded two 2017 Langan Engineering & Environmental Services Legacy Scholarships to Venkata Sakleshpur and Julia Langewis. A third Langan scholarship, the Langan/Dennis J. Leary Memorial Scholarship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will be awarded in the spring. The Legacy Scholarships fund was established in 2015 with a $200,000 donation from Langan Engineering & Environmental Services and an additional contribution of $102,000 generously made by many principals of Langan. Venkata Sakleshpur is the recipient of the $5,000 Langan/ Bernard F. Langan Scholarship at Purdue University. Sakleshpur is a Ph.D. candidate in civil engi- neering, and his research topic is Analysis of Direct and Mixed (Piled) MSE Abutments. Julia Langewis is the recipient of the $5,000 Langan/Donald J . Murphy Memorial Scholarship at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Langewis is a fifth- year undergraduate student, and is studying civil engineering and math- ematics. She is interested in environmental engineering and worked for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations last summer. Byrl Williams, P.E., Chair [email protected] Merjan Scholarships Four students at City College of New York (CCNY) have received scholar- ship awards from the DFI Educational Trust Stanley Merjan Civil Engineering Schol- arship Fund. Nahla Ali is an undergraduate student studying civil engineering, with a concentration in structure. She is the treasurer of the ASCE Chapter at CCNY and works as a research assistant in the field of transportation engineering. Kseniya Davydova is a junior studying civil engineering. She heads the Corporate Relations Committee for Engineers Without Borders and organizes events to raise money for the club’s trips to Nicaragua.
