Upcoming 2016 DFI Seminars and Conferences DFI is hosting a variety of seminars and conferences this summer. To keep up to date with the latest information, visit www.dfi.org, like DFI on Facebook or join DFI’s LinkedIn Group. International Bridge Conference DFI is supporting the 2016 International Bridge Conference (IBC) in National Harbor, Md., June 6-10, 2016, by delivering a special technical session on foundations and organizing a dedicated industry-wide foundations exhibition area. The IBC is organized by the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP), and is a forum for DFI members to interact with bridge-focused structural engineers and owners and highlight technical capabilities and resources that promote quality, safety, sustainability and durability of bridge foundations while reducing project risk. Presenters in the special foundations session discuss how collaboration between structural, geotechnical and construction practitioners provides high-value foundation solutions and allows logistical, contractual, technical and changed conditions challenges to be met effectively on high-profile bridge projects. The dedicated area of the exhibition hall focuses attention on foundation service providers who may have been overlooked in past years. We hope this interaction helps build relationships between structural and geotechnical practitioners to understand mutual goals and expectations. Please contact Technical Activities Manager Mary Ellen Large at [email protected] to get involved. Helical Piles and Tiebacks Specialty Seminar This year’s Helical Piles and Tiebacks Seminar is being planned for July/August in the Los Angeles area. This 1.5-day seminar offers technical presentations and case studies on helical piles and anchors in seismic and lateral load conditions as well as a helical pile installation demonstration. Presentations provide an overview of the fundamentals of helical piles and helical tieback design and installation with topics specific to seismic and lateral loading, materials, construction and testing procedures. Nick Farkas of Grip-Tite Manufacturing Co., BJ Dwyer of Magnum Piering and Committee Chair, Gary Seider, P.E., of Hubbell Power Systems/Chance are leading this event. S3: Slopes, Slides and Stabilization Seminar DFI’s Deep Foundations for Landslides/Slope Stabilization and Tiebacks and Soil Nailing Committees are organizing this two-day event featuring lectures by industry experts on current technologies, key design concepts, and case histories that illustrate effective application of deep foundations for stabilization of slopes and excavation support. The goal is to present recent and future projects that include challenging slope and landslide repairs and excavation support with deep foundation methods. DEEP FOUNDATIONS • MAR/APR 2016 • 33 The seminar is on August 1-3, 2016, at the Westin Denver International Airport in Denver, Colo. The conference organizing chairs for this event are Professor Vern Schaefer, P.E., of Iowa State University and chair of the Deep Foundations for Landslides/Slope Stabilization Committee, and Ed Laczynski, P.E., of GA & FC Wagman and chair of the Tiebacks and Soil Nailing Committee. DFI has future plans to grow this seminar into a conference focusing on stabilization methods that employ deep foundations technologies; similar in scope to SuperPile, which focuses on all aspects of piling. Soil Mixing Seminar DFI’s Soil Mixing Committee, led by Chair Dennis W. Boehm of Hayward Baker, is planning this one-day seminar, which presents the evolution of the soil mixing industry with regard to innovations over the years in design methodologies, quality assurance and control programs, advances in the uses of soil mixing applications, and case histories that document projects using soil mixing techniques. The event is currently planned for September in Orlando, Fla. Stay tuned for details. DFI-India 2016 DFI of India, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Engineering IGS Kolkata Chapter, is hosting DFI-India 2016: 6 Conference on Deep Foundations Technologies for Infrastructure Development in India, September 9-10, 2016, at IIEST Shibpur in Kolkata, India. This two day conference focuses on technology developments and case histories on drilled and driven piling systems, ground improvement, deep excavation systems and soft soil engineering in underground space applications. A one-day workshop precedes the conference on September 8. The event attracts contractors, developers, local and government representatives, designers, consultants and educators involved in geotechnical design and construction. Equipment, material and instrumentation suppliers, contractors and other vendors are presenting their products and services in the Exhibit Hall.
