DFI Educational Trust Update Trust Board Meets at WPM The Board of Trustees of the DFI Educational Trust held its Winter Planning Meeting on February 4, 2015 in Santa Fe, N.M. This was the first meeting presided by Byrl Williams, newly-elected chairman of the board. In addition to attending to regular Trust business, the board also dedicated a substantial portion of the day to discussing a five-year strategy to grow the organization by developing more varied forms of fundraising. The Trust’s assets, composed mostly of named scholarship endowments, are currently valued at approximately $2.3 million. The board has set a goal of adding at least $1 million to this amount by 2020. Langan Establishes Endowed Fund With a $200,000 donation, Langan Engi- neering & Environmental Services has established the “Langan Engineering & Environmental Services Legacy Scholarship Fund” at the DFI Educational Trust. The fund will provide scholarships to civil engineering students who are focusing on geotechnical and/or environmental engineering. Within the fund, there will be three standing scholarships honoring former distinguished members of the Langan company: The Bernard F. Langan Scholar- ship at Purdue University, the Dennis J. Leary Memorial Scholarship at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, and the Donald J. Murphy Memorial Scholarship at NYU/Polytechnic School of Engineering. In addition to the company’s corporate contribution, several principals and staff members of Langan have made additional individual contributions totaling $102,000. This brings the total present value of the Langan Fund to over $300,000. The Trust is grateful to Langan and its employees for their generosity. The Trust Board would also like to recognize Trustee Rudy Frizzi for his efforts in facilitating these donations as well as for his own generous personal contribution. Berkel & Company Donation Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc., has made a $25,000 donation to the Charles J. Berkel Memorial Scholarship Fund. This fund was started in 2008 with a $1 million donation from the late Charles J. Berkel, CEO of Berkel & Company Contractors. Since its inception, the fund has awarded $336,000 in scholarships. The Trust thanks Alan Roach, president of Berkel & Company Contractors and DFI board member, for his generosity. Manuel Fine Scholarship Fund The endowment for the Manuel Fine Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund grew substantially in 2014.
