Henn one year ago and has operated the Denver and Fort Collins-based specialty geotechnical, tunneling, and trenchless services group as a separate division for two years. Lyman Henn specializes in providing high-level geotechnical, tunneling, and trenchless design and construction management services for water, wastewater, transportation, energy, and oil and gas projects. Smart Structures and Ga n n e t t F l emi n g announced a training partnership in support of the SmartPile™ System. This application casts sensors and a wireless transmitter directly into concrete piles making it possible to test every driven pile in a bridge or building foundation. The system features lower foundation costs and higher quality assurance and capacity reporting, and has been successfully applied in more than 2,000 piles throughout the Southeast. Keith Bennett, a vice president and senior geotechnical engineer at Gannett Fleming based in Largo, Fla. made the announcement, and the training will begin at that office. The firm’s programs during the past decade have included successful training and certification for Pile Driving (CTQP) and Drilled Shaft Inspections. Schnabel Engineering, Inc. (Schnabel), Glen Allen, Va., was a winner in ACEC/NC Engineering Excellence competition for the firm’s work on its Deep Creek Watershed Dam 5D project. The objective of the EEA award is “to recognize engineering and surveying firms for projects which demonstrate the highest degree of achievement, value and ingenuity.” Schnabel is the principal designer and engineer of record for the new Deep Creek Watershed Dam 5D constructed in Yadkin County, N. C. The Deep Creek project included the first use of grout enriched roller compacted concrete (GERCC) in the U.S. as the sole upstream barrier. This innovative process includes addition of a cement grout to the no-slump Roller- compacted concrete at each lift along the upstream face and then mixing the grout and RCC using hand held vibrators to consolidate the material and provide a seamless lower permeability zone of concrete. The use of GERCC resulted in considerable savings to the project. The Building Commissioning Associ- ation (BCA) released its New Construc- tion Building Commissioning Best Practices. This publicly-available docu- ment is applicable to most building types and distills the long list of guidelines, and longer list of tasks, into easy-to-navigate activities that represent the ideal com- missioning process. The new publication draws upon resources such as the BCA’s own Building Commissioning Handbook, NEBB Procedural Standards for “Whole Building Systems Commissioning of New Construction,” National Institute of Build- ing Science (NIBS) “Whole Building Design Guide,” ASHRAE Guideline 0-2005, ASHRAE Guideline 1.1-2007 and the USGBC LEED rating system. The document is available on the BCA website at www.bcxa.org. The ACE Mentor Program of America is one of eight recipients of the 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). President Obama said in a White House press release, “Our Nation owes them a debt of gratitude for helping ensure that America remains the global leader in science and engineering for years to come.” PAESMEM is the nation’s highest award for mentoring. Since its establishment in 1996, only 200 or so individuals/organizations have earned this distinction. By offering their expertise and encouragement, mentors help prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers. Charles H. Thornton, Ph.D., P.E., chairman and founder of ACE, said the award is a wonderful recognition of ACE’s success. But most important, the men and women who have taken our help and gone on to spectacular careers in architecture, construction and engineering. DFI collaborates with ACE. Schnabel Engineering, Inc. (Schnabel), Glen Allen, Va., has appointed Nigel Miller, P.E., as an associate of the firm. He brings to Schnabel more than 15 years of experience in transportation, energy and infrastructure, including work on the Western Wake Freeway, I-15, Legacy Highway and other design-build pursuits, and will lead Schnabel’s transportation pursuits in the Carolinas. Miller has experience on highway bridges, roadway pavements and embankments, airport runways, bridges, retaining structures, high-rise buildings, earth dams, energy transmission lines and large-diameter pipelines. He has managed, reviewed and performed design and construction phase engineering duties for many projects with technical challenges. Miller holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in civil engineering (Geotechnical) from Brigham Young University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina. Ed Trust Golf Outings July 9, 2012 & Sept. 18, 2012 The first DFI Educational Trust Golf Outing Fundraiser of 2012 is the 7th Annual Event in Pittsburgh, Pa., at Chartiers Country Club. Chaired by DFI Past President Seth Pearlman, president of Menard, the funds raised at this golf outing are earmarked to support the ongoing student schol- arships at Carnegie Mellon. On September 18, DFI and the ACE Mentor Program of New Jersey host the 2nd Annual Golf Outing at the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township, NJ. Go to www.dfi.org and select DFI Events in the menu for more infor- mation on both golf outings. 86 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • MAR/APR 2012
