EDUCATIONAL TRUST A Message From the Trust Chair I’m pleased to present the 2018 Trust Annual Report, which was mailed with this issue of Deep Foundations and is available online at www.dfitrust.org . The year ended with the Trust having assets in excess of $3.4 million, about the same as the end of 2017. During 2018, the Trust awarded $173,000 in scholarships, also about the same as in 2017. Are these scholarships working to increase the visibility of the deep foundations industry to students and attract new employees? Our surveys show that over 50 percent of our scholarship awardees are now working in the deep foundations industry. The Trust board has also implemented some new procedures that should further increase that percen- tage. We thank all of our contributors and event sponsors for making this possible. The Trust has also supported the DFI Women in Deep Foundations (WiDF) Committee since its inception. The goal is to foster greater success and interest of professional women in the industry by promoting networking events, endorsing outreach and building mentoring rela- tionships. The Trust’s WiDF Fund has been awarding professional development grants to deserving women to cover travel costs to attend our annual conference (along with a free registration) for several years now. How successful has this program and this group’s outreach been? Since this group’s first meeting the number of women attending our annual conference has doubled. The Trust’s scholarships provide significant financial support to our student recipients so they can realize their dream of completing their undergraduate or graduate civil engineering education. College expenses continue to rise dramatically and so does the level of debt students take on in order to meet these costs. We therefore ask you to support our efforts by making a personal or corporate donation to the DFI Educational Trust this year as an investment in the future of our industry.* Any amount you donate will make a difference. We need to attract more young people and women into all aspects of our industry whether as a con- tractor, consultant, supplier, aca- demic or owner. You can make your donation online by visiting www.dfitrust.org.* Scholarships Awarded The Trust recently awarded 14 scholarships to civil engineering students focusing on geotechnical and/or environ- mental engineering at the University of Illinois and Auburn University. The recipient of the Langan/Dennis J. Leary Memorial Scholarship is University of Illinois junior, Eleftherios Monaxios. The scholarship is named for Dennis J. Leary, a partner at Langan and a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. The scholarship is part of the Trust’s Langan Engineering and Environ- mental Services Legacy Fund, which was established in 2015. The recipients of the Charles J. Berkel Memorial Scholarship at the University of Illinois are David Kiepic, Kayla O’Sullivan and Elisabeth Tarpey. The recipients at Auburn University are Garrett Smith, Sarah Bacon, Robert Miles, Nicole Reed, Brooke Earls, Kelly Turner, Jared Allen, Megan Foshee, Jacob DeBusk and Christy Man- ning. The scholarship is named in memory of Charles J. Berkel, chairman of the board of Berkel & Company Contractors and a graduate of the University of Illinois.
