Equipment, Hubbell Power Systems, MacLean Civil Products, Magnum Piering, Pileworks and SSRG. More than 30 attendees participated in the pile prediction competition to predict the axial load on a helical pile installed at the fairgrounds at a specified deflection prior to a static load test based on provided geotechnical data. Winners of the pile prediction competition were David Roggy of American Ground Screw, Dale Plett of Versapile and Mohamed Abdelaziz of Almita Piling. Congratulations to these winners, who can claim bragging rights until the next event! Outdoor live exhibitions/demonstrations session room for the indoor presentations and organized the extensive logistics required for the presentations, equipment displays and dining/reception. Glenn Beesley, fairgrounds superintendent, could not have been more accommodating and helpful throughout our stay. Karen Dawson, P.E., Jacobs, chaired the indoor program, comprising presentations by industry experts on relevant design procedures, codes and standards, corrosion protection, lateral load and seismic design considerations, static load testing, dynamic testing, innovations and advancements and others. Matt Conte, CPC, Conte Company, planned and coordinated the outdoor demon- strations and load testing program, involving live pile installation and axial, lateral and dynamic load testing, and complementary instructional presentations. Applications included underpinning, large diameter pile installation, boardwalk support, container support and guy anchors/tiedowns. Gary Seider, P.E., Hubbell Power Systems and chair of the DFI Helical Piles and Tiebacks Committee, supported by Howard Perko, Ph.D., P.E., DFI trustee, Magnum Piering, provided steady guidance and reinforcement to the entire team throughout the planning and execution of this great program. Various helical pile elements were installed and tested in the load test area. The activities in the load test area were supported by Wayne Thompson, Ryan Beck and Chip Leadbetter of CTL Thompson (load testing and data collection), Ben White and Brandon Phetteplace of GRL Engineers (dynamic load testing), BJ Dwyer and Todd Paddock of Magnum Piering 28 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JULY/AUG 2019 (load test frames and construction), Ron Lech of Terracon (site investigation), Ben Steinhauer of SSRG (equipment for materials handling and call-before-you-dig) and the Kleingers Group (surveying). Special thanks for the contributions of the outdoor exhibitors – American Piledriving Attendee feedback was positive, and we hope that this first-of-its-kind event will start a new chapter for DFI’s educational offerings. Thanks again to the idea man, program and organizing teams, attendees, exhibitors, sponsors and organizers. See all photos at www.dfi.org/Helical19.
