PEOPLE & COMPANIES Af ter 30 years, Tom Richards, P.E., D.GE, has retired as chief engineer with Nicholson Con- struct ion Company. Through a storied career of solving geotechnical mysteries, volun- teering his time and experience to industry organizations and mentoring younger generations, he has made an immeasurable mark on those he has worked with over the years. He has led the design and testing efforts for hundreds of the most technically challenging projects in the country, including multiple projects for the recovery and reconstruction of the World Trade Center, the Capitol Visitor Center, Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, and several large dams, including Gilboa Dam and Lake Lynn Dam. Richards is a licensed professional engineer in several states and has published numerous technical papers focused on developing a better understanding of difficult technical topics. He has also been an active member of many professional organizations, including DFI, ADSC and Post Tensioning Institute. He has been a DFI trustee since 2015, is a member and trustee liaison of the DFI-ADSC Anchored Earth Retention Committee, a member and for- mer chair of the DFI Micropile Committee and serves on the DFI Committee Project Fund Review Committee and the Working Platforms Industry-Wide Working Group. the state-of-the-practice lecture titled, “The Stabilization of Major Landslides Using Drilled and Grouted Elements.” Steele Foundation was honored by the Washington Business Journal as one of the top multigenerational family-owned busi- in its 4 annual Family-Owned Business Awards competition. The Brazilian Association of Foundations The 22 Annual Sowers Symposium was held at the Georgia Institute of Technology Academy of Medicine on May 7, 2019, in Atlanta, Ga. During the symposium, John Wolosick, P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, of Hayward Baker, was awarded the George F. Sowers Piedmont Award from the Georgia ASCE/Geo-Institute. Wolosick presented nd Seminar and 3 Exposition on Special Foundation Engineering and Geotechnics (SEFE9) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from June 4- 6, 2019. David Miller, P.E., of ADM Consulting and chair of the DFI Soil Mixing Committee, Franz-Werner Gerressen, Dipl.-Ing., of Bauer Maschinen, and Sebastian Lobo-Guerrero, Ph.D., P.E., of AGES, represented DFI and each delivered a keynote lecture at the event. Miller presented a lecture on soil mixing and its growth regarding excavation support systems. Gerressen delivered a lecture (ABEF), invited DFI to participate in the 9 rd and Geotechnical Engineering Companies th pertaining to diaphragm wall construction. Lobo-Guerrero delivered the closing keynote lecture on landslide stabilization with deep foundation systems. Equipment Corporation of America (ECA) announced two promotions and five new service managers in the U.S. and Canada. Anthony Sciortino w a s p r o m o t e d t o northeast regional sales manager and will manage the firm’s product lines in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Sciortino came to ECA in 2015 when the company acquired New England Construction Products, where he was a mechanic and sales representative. He was named sales engineer in March 2015 and held that position until now. Sciortino earned a B.S. in construction management at the University of Massachusetts. Ray Kemppainen was promoted to vice president at ECA Canada Company. Kemppainen’s history predates ECA Canada, which was formed on December 31, 1999, when ECA acquired Specialty Construction Machines (SCM), where he was the service and parts manager.
