diameter drilled pilings have been installed to depths ranging between 31 and 36 m (102 and 118 ft). Construction began in March 2018, and the contractor, Botero Ingenieros, needed only 8 months to complete the work due to the impressive performance of the LRB 355. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced the release of two new publications: GEC 9 - Design, Analysis, and Testing of Laterally Loaded Deep Foundations that Support Transportation Facilities (FHWA-NHI-18-031) and GEC 10 - Drilled Shafts: Construction Procedures and Design Methods (FHWA-NHI-18-024). The publications are available for download at www.fhwa.dot.gov/engineering/geotech. Hard copies of the publication are available to the public for purchase from the National Highway Institute at www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov. GEC 9 is intended to provide recom- mended guidance for the design, analysis and testing of laterally loaded deep foundation elements. The document applies to a variety of deep foundation types including driven piles, drilled shafts, micro- piles and continuous flight auger (CFA) piles that are commonly used to resist lateral loads, often in combination with axial loads in support of transportation structures. GEC 10 (2019) replaces GEC-10 (2010) and provides recommended guidance for the selection, design, construction and acceptance of drilled shaft foundations for transportation structures. The document has been updated with photographs and figures to better illustrate recent developments in equipment and techniques for construction and testing. In addition, updates have been made to design guidance and quality assurance procedures to better reflect evolution in construction procedures, and changes in the AASHTO specifications. Thomas J. Wysockey, SHK (June 18, 1931 – July 9, 2019) Thomas J. Wysockey, 88, died peacefully on July 9. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Simonne, children: Simonne Soudan, John (Rebecca) Wysockey, Kathryn (Doug) Wysockey-Johnson, Michael (Tracy) Wysockey, and 14 grandchildren. He was chairman emeritus of Thatcher Foundations Inc. where he was well known for his integrity, ingenuity, commitment to safety and sense of humor. A 1953 graduate of The Citadel with a B.S. in civil engineering, he joined Thatcher in 1957 after a short stint in the US Army Corps of Engineers. He was a board member of the American Subcontractors Association (ASA), director of the Builders Association and the Chicagoland Construction Safety Council, trustee of the Construction Advancement Foundation, trustee of the 110 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JULY/AUG 2019 Deep Foundations Institute (DFI), president of the Industrial Contractors and Builders Association of Indiana, board member of the Society of American Military Engineers, member of the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings, and president of the Pile Driving Contractors Association. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the ASA, Chicago Chapter. The DFI awards two annual scholarships in his name for undergraduate or graduate study. He will be the 2019 recipient of the DFI Legends Award in Construction. He enjoyed golf and was an avid sailor, both competitively and for pleasure with family travels. He sailed all over the world. He piloted his own plane, 522PN. And his stories were even better, a true raconteur. He lived well and loved well. He was one of the great ones. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the DFI Educational Trust Thomas J. Wysockey Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund, 326 Lafayette Avenue Hawthorne, NJ 07506 or online at www.dfitrust.org, or to Misericordia, 6300 N Ridge Avenue, Chicago, IL 60660.
