EDUCATIONAL TRUST A Message from the Trust Chair The Trust board is proud to present the 2017 Trust Annual Report, which was mailed with this print issue of Deep Foundations magazine and is available online at www.dfitrust.org. At the end of 2017, the Trust had assets in excess of $3.4 million, a 12 percent increase from 2016. During the year, the Trust awarded $173,000 in scholarships, as compared to $134,000 in 2016. We thank all of our contributors and event sponsors for making this possible. The Trust’s scholarships provide significant financial support to our student recipients so they can realize their dream of completing their undergraduate or graduate civil engineering education. College expenses continue to rise dramatically and so does the level of debt students take on in order to meet these costs. Without the scholarships, some of the recipients may not have been able to finish their education. We are pleased to be able to support and assist these students through the generous support of the deep foundations community. We encourage you to help with our efforts by making a donation to the Trust*, both personally and through your company. Any amount you donate will make a difference. The foundation community is very generous by its nature. In the U.S. alone, donations exceed $300 billion annually to non-profits, and it is interesting to note that 70 percent of these contribu- tions are from individuals. You can make your donation at www.dfitrust.org. Starting in this issue of the magazine, we plan to annually feature a donor that has supported the Trust. The first donor profile (page 67) features Charles J. Berkel: Chairman of the Board of Berkel & Company Contractors (May 10, 1925 - November 4, 2013). Scholarships Awarded On April 7, at the University of Illinois’ Annual Civil and Environmental Engi- neering Awards Convocation and Lunch- eon, the Trust awarded scholarships to several students. Elisabeth Tarpey, Jessica Silva and Nathaniel Zipperich received awards from the DFI Educational Trust Charles J. Berkel Memorial Scholarship Fund. Kent Eng was the recipient of the Langan/Dennis J. Leary Memorial Scholarship. DFI Trustee Rudy Frizzi presented the awards on behalf of the Trust and Langan. Dan Dragone, Chair [email protected] Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to civil engineering students attending universities in the Province of Ontario. The application period for the scholarship opens in early September. Two US$2,500 scholarships will be awarded in 2019.
