EDUCATIONAL TRUST A Message from the Trust Chair I am proud to present the DFI Educational Trust’s 2016 Annual Report, which was mailed with this print issue of Deep Foundations magazine and is available online at www.dfitrust.org. At the end of 2016, the Trust had assets in excess of $3.1 million. In addition, the Trust awarded $134,000 in scholarships, up from $112,000 in 2015. Since its founding in 2006, the Trust has awarded $752,000 in scholarships. This past year, the Trust also expanded its program to Canada, awarding its first scholarships to students from the Manuel Fine Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund. We thank all of our contributors and event sponsors for making this possible. The Trust’s scholarships provide signi- ficant financial support to our student recipients so they can realize their dream of completing their undergraduate or graduate civil engineering education. College expenses continue to rise dramatically and so does the level of debt students take on to meet these costs. According to the New York Times, student debt now exceeds both car loan and credit card debt for American families. We, therefore, ask you to help us with our efforts by making a personal donation to the Trust*. Any amount you donate will make a difference. Americans are very generous, donating more than $300 billion annually to nonprofits, and it is interesting to note that 70 percent of these contributions are from individuals. Scholarship Ceremony During the annual scholarship ceremony of the College of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in April, scholarships from two DFI Educational Trust scholar- ship funds were presented. Students Tomasz Rutkowski, Emiliano Alvarez and Joseph Binkowski each received awards from the Charles J. Berkel Memorial Scholarship Fund, presented by Trust board member, Rudy Frizzi, of Langan Engineering and Environmental Services. Emiliano Alvarez (l) receiving the Charles J. Leary Memor ial Scholarship, which is part of the Trust’s Langan Engineering and Environmental Services Legacy Fund. The award was presented by Langan’s Alan Poeppel. M. Byrl Williams, P.E., Chair [email protected] 5K Fun Run & Walk The Trust is holding a 5K Fun Run during the DFI 42 Annual Conference on Deep Foundations. Proceeds benefit the Trust’s General Fund, which supports students pursuing careers in the deep foundations engineering and construction industry. Registration is $35 and participants receive a custom race shirt and are entered into a drawing for a chance to win an Official NFL Football autographed by Archie Manning, renowned NFL quarterback and DFI’s Hal Hunt Lecturer on Communications.
