PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Take Up a Hobby and Round Out Your Life D o you have a hobby or hobbies? I watched my father retire at the age of 58 when his company downsized. He had nothing else to do. He worked his whole life and did little outside of his job. Plans to reside in Florida didn’t work out when my mother’s health failed. At age 63, and bored to death, he went back to work and continued to work full-time until he was 80. He had no hobbies, and many of his friends had passed away. adult baseball team that I manage in several photos through the years. I have been coaching baseball, starting with Little League, for 20 years. My current team is part of the MABL – Men’s Adult Baseball League in Atlanta. Most of my players are 25-26 years old, and we have been part of this league since 2008. It is serious hardball, with wood bats and 85 mph pitching. We play from April until September on Sunday John Wolosick, P.E., D.GE President [email protected] developed an interest in collecting. I like cards from the 50s, but am also interested in the early 60s. I have the complete set of 1954 Bowman Gum baseball card set – 224 cards. I also enjoy collecting 50s and 60s star cards such as Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, etc. I like old cars. Classic cars are a great hobby that can run the gamut from very cheap to very expensive. Car clubs are a great way to see new places and make friends that have similar interests (rusty metal, oily hands). I bought my Porsche 911 in 1983 and I still drive it weekly. I also have a 1959 Porsche 356 that is co-owned with DFI John’s current baseball team and with one of his Porsches Hobbies are important. Some people, like my father, use their work as a hobby. I love my work, but find it fun to get away from doing the same thing all week with other activities that I enjoy. I always find it interesting when I receive a resume to look for a person’s listed hobbies. One’s hobbies can tell you a lot about the individual. Are they hunters or fishermen, gardeners or campers? Do they enjoy participating in sports or attending professional sporting events? Do folks enjoy yoga, jogging or the gym? Boating has always been big in our company. We also have a few pilots. The variations of available hobbies are endless. Many of you know my hobbies (if you get the ADSC Foundation Drilling magazine). Scot Litke showed the men’s afternoons all around Atlanta. It is a very exciting and rewarding pastime. My brother and my son are also baseball coaches. I am sure that many of you reading this message are coaches in youth leagues around the country and world. Cherish this hobby and your time with the kids, and pass on your love of baseball or whatever sport you are passionate about. It is really fun to be involved in competition as a hobby. I am not done! I also collect pocket knives and baseball cards. I enjoy buying vintage pocket and sheath knives at shows and on eBay. Many of these knives are works of art. The price ranges vary widely. I have collected baseball cards all my life, but really got serious when my son was young and member Nadir Ansari. It also gets driven frequently. The old Porsche club guys around Atlanta are an eclectic group, as you might imagine. Now, this is a fun hobby! We do drives in the North Georgia mountains, on the lookout for obscure barbeque restaurants. We get to drive on tracks like Road Atlanta and Atlanta Motor Speedway on event days. We have quarterly meetings with tech sessions on how to maintain and repair our old cars. How fun is that?! Pick a hobby that tickles your fancy. That way, you will have a lot of fun things to look forward to or to do when you have some time on your hands. DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JULY/AUG 2015 • 7
