PEOPLE & COMPANIES Ben Dutton retired from Equipment Corporation of America (ECA) in Decem- ber 2018 after more than 43 years. His large person- ality and commitment to serving others have left a mark throughout the global foundation industry. Dutton started as a sales engineer at ECA in 1975 and quickly advanced to the role of Philadelphia Branch Manager at age 29. He spent many years as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing before eventually being promoted to President. Although stationed in ECA’s Philadelphia office, his influence extended from the U.S. to Canada and to Europe, as the firm strategically expanded products, manufac- turers, and markets. The peak of his impact came in the mid-1990s when he worked with Roy Kern, CEO of ECA, to orchestrate the firm’s expansion into the international drilling market. Dutton’s industry accom- plishments include serving as president of the board of directors of the Delaware Valley Associated Equipment Distributors, and associate members chair and member of the executive committee of the International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC). He was a charter member of the DFI and remained active over many years. In addition, Dutton was active with other associations including PDCA, Associated Pennsylvania Constructors, and Utility and Transportation Contractors of New Jersey. 2018, at the invitation of Prof. Vernon Schaefer, P.E., James M. Hoover Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Iowa State Universi ty’s Department of Civi l , Cons t ruct ion and Envi ronmental Engineering. The lecture highlighted how mentoring can develop technical and professional networks and career advancement and outlined a strategy for seeking, recognizing and participating in mentoring act ivi t ies and network development. The lecture reviewed Large’s personal experiences as a geotechnical engineer, owner of a women-owned geotechnical consultancy, and advisor for the DFI Women in Deep Foundations Committee. He is overseeing the group’s international marketing campaign with a focus on promoting products and establishing dealers in North, Central and South America. Patterson has a long history in the deep foundations industry, where he was associate members chair and member of the executive committee and board of directors of ADSC. During the past 20 years, he promoted specialty drilling, education and training in North and South America. He will use his knowledge and experience to guide the Ougan Group wi th i ts introduction of the Super Cell bi-directional load cell and Chinese-manufactured drilling equipment from Canada to Chile. Mary Ellen Bruce Large, P.E., D.GE, director of technical activities for DFI, de l i v e r ed the J ame s M. Hoov e r Distinguished Lecture on October 31, Helen Robinson, P.E., branch leader /senior project manager at GEI Consultants, was named as one of ENR MidAtlantic’s 2019 Top Young Profes- sionals. The awards program honors individuals who have built extraordinary industry portfolios in just a few short years, and many of whom donate significant amounts of time and expertise to serve their communities. Each recipient will be profiled in more detail in the February 2019 issue of ENR MidAtlantic. Andrew Owen joined the board McMillen Jacobs in October 2018 as a principal in the Melbourne office and also serves as the office manager. He has more than 34 years of experience specializing in commercial and operat ional project planning, construction estimating, performance management, and cost analysis. Owen has managed multidisciplinary teams and mobi l ized resources on over seas assignments including public-private partnership projects. He has been a key player in the design management for North West Rail Link, KVMRT projects, and Doha Metro Tenders for Red and Green Lines. Having worked for both contractors and design teams, he has a comprehensive understanding of practical construction techniques and the constructability of major projects. Owen received an H.N.C. degree in civil engineering (structures) at Wolverhampton Polytechnic while working in the planning and estimating department of a tunneling company. He later went on to obtain his M.B.A. from North Staffordshire University while gaining experience in estimating and business development in the construction industry. Joe Savarese, piling equipment specialist for DFI member company CZM Foun- dation Equipment, was appointed a new board member of the ADSC Northeast Chapter at its annual meeting in November 2018. At the meeting, 11 new board mem- bers were chosen and installed to serve. Joseph F. Malandro and Dr. Moujalli Hourani were presented with The Moles Outstanding Achievement Member and Nonmember Awards, respectively, at The Moles’ Annual Award Dinner at the New York Hilton Midtown on January 23, 2019. Malandro is the recently retired president of E. E. Cruz & Company, where his distinguished career in construction has always been guided by his enthusiasm for problem-solving and a contractor’s drive for DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JAN/FEB 2019 • 101
