Registration Open Registration is now open for SuperPile ’17, taking place June 14–16, 2017, at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort in Coronado, Calif. (outside San Diego). This two-day conference will include presentations on the latest developments in the following areas*: • Projects relevant to the Southern California area • Augered Cast-in-Place and Drilled Displacement Piles • Drilled Shafts • Driven Piles • Marine Foundations • Micropiles • Seismic and Lateral Loads • Testing and Evaluation • Ground Improvement (related to piling) • Helical Piles and Tiebacks • Topics and Case Studies Pertaining to Safety - Designing for safety - Driven pile safety - Procedures for reinforcing steel/cage lifting - Working platforms - Safety considerations for marine projects - Drill rig and crane safety - Instrumentation, load testing, monitoring - Safety culture (management, personnel, communication, training) - Reaction to extreme or unexpected conditions (inclement weather, flooding, seismic, etc.) *Technical program topics subject to change The conference kicks off on June 14 with committee meetings and a networking event. Day One is a plenary (combined) session. Day Two has at least two parallel sessions, providing attendees the option to choose presentations of interest. Invited and selected presentations will highlight advancements, innovations and challenges in design and construction of deep foundations, particularly related to piling solutions. Panel discussions on current topics will provide attendees opportunities to share new ideas and industry experience. Equipment, material and instrumentation suppliers; contractors; engineers; and other vendors will present their services in the exhibit hall. For more information or to register, visit www.dfi-superpile.org. SuperPile ’17 Chair This year’s SuperPile chair is Ben Vance, P.E., project engineer at Strata and chair of DFI’s Driven Pile Committee. Vance’s areas of expertise include retaining walls, support of excavation, slope stability, settlement, shallow foundations, rock bol ts, l iquefact ion, geogrids and geosynthetics, driven piles, pile drivability, ground improvement, and predicting and mitigating stress on utilities. Committee members Rick Walsh, P.E., G.E., business development manager at Hayward Baker, and Charles Braun, P.E., sales manager at Williams Form Engineering, are providing local support. Awards and Lectures The Osterberg Memorial Lecture is the opening presentation for SuperPile ’17. The annual lecture and award was established by DFI Corporate Member, Loadtest, in conjunction with the DFI Educational Trust, in honor of Dr. Jorj O. Osterberg. Osterberg is considered one of the true pioneers of geotechnical engineering. The lecture and award recognize innovations in deep foundation construction related to engineering design, testing or education — all aspects of Osterberg’s lifelong contributions. Visit www.dfi.org to find out who has been selected as the DFI 2017 Osterberg Lecturer. The Ben C. Gerwick Award for Innovation in the Design and Construction of Marine Foundations is also being presented at SuperPile ’17, following the conference luncheon. This award was established in 2008 to recognize the innovative spirit of Gerwick and his phenomenal contributions to the marine foundation industry during his 62-year professional career as a contractor, educator and construction engineer. The award encourages and recognizes innovation in the marine foundation industry. DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JAN/FEB 2017 • 33
