2017 Australia Update I DFI ® Piled Foundations & Ground Improvement Technology For the Modern Building and Infrastructure Sector 21-22 March 2017 DFI, in conjunction with the Piling and Foundation Specialists Fed- eration (PFSF), is hosting a conference on Piling and Ground Improvement Technology for the Modern Building and Infra- structure Sector. This highly-anticipated international event will be held March 21-22, 2017, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibi- tion Centre in Melbourne, Australia, and registration is now open. Confirmed Keynote Speakers The following three keynote speakers were previously announced: Chris Haberfield, Ph.D., principal geotechnical engineer of Golder Associates in Melbourne, will present “Geotechnical Design Considerations for Rock Socketed Piles,” which will discuss the various factors impacting rock socketed pile performance and will show how an understanding of these factors can lead to more reliable and cost-effective pile design. Speaker Harry Poulos, Ph.D., P.E., consultant with the Coffey Group, will present “Designing Piles for Seismic Events.” His lecture will set out a systematic approach by which the foundation designer can satisfy the requirements for pile foundation design in seismic areas. The broad issues that will be considered include the assessment of the relevant earthquake characteristics, quanti- fication of the relevant geotechnical parameters and means of esti- mating the actions induced in the piles by the design earthquake. Philippe Vincent, managing director at Menard Oceania, will present “Ground Improvement by Dynamic Replacement within Intertidal Mangrove Mud Environment Ichthys LNG, Darwin.” His presentation will focus on the design philosophy, the process involved in the selection of the construction methods, the site constraints encountered during the works in addition to a review of the results achieved, quality control and post-construction performance of the Ichthys LNG development. New Keynote Speaker DFI President Dan Brown, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE, of Dan Brown and Associates, will deliver his presentation on the “Challenges in the Design and Construction of Deep Foundations for Transportation Melbourne, Australia Infrastructure Projects.” He will pro- vide an overview of the challenges faced by deep foundation designers and constructors in the fast-paced, limited-site access environments of major cities and the methods that have successfully been employed on several large transportation projects in the U.S. Brown spent 22 years on the faculty of Auburn University, and now remains active in deep foundation practice through his consulting firm, Dan Brown and Associates. Brown has been recognized with the ASCE Martin Kapp Foundation Engineering Award, the DFI Distinguished Service Award and the ADSC Outstanding Service Award. He has authored numerous technical papers and was the lead author of the 2010 FHWA manual Drilled Shafts: Construction Procedures and LRFD Design Methods. Technical Topics Presentations at the conference will be on the following topics: • Risk-based design approaches • Application of foundation testing techniques for design validation • Pile supported raft foundation applications • Equipment advances • Challenging and innovative case histories • Practical quality control and inspection programs • Modeling and laboratory scale testing of improved soils • Foundation and excavation performance and monitoring • Piling applications for energy projects Learn more and register for this event at www.dfi.org/pfsf2017.
