Osterberg Memorial Lecturers Past and Future DFI and the DFI Educational Trust annually select a recipient for the Osterberg Memor- ial Lecture and Award, which is presented at a fundraising dinner with all proceeds benefiting the DFI Educational Trust Scholarship Fund. The award was estab- lished in honor of Dr. Jorj O. Osterberg, one of the true pioneers of geotechnical engi- neering, to recognize innovations in deep foundations construction related to engineering design, testing or education. The DFI 2014 Osterberg Lecturer was Dr. Kyle Rollins, professor at Brigham Young University. Frank Rausche, Ph.D., P.E., of GRL Engineers, Inc., was selected as the DFI 2015 Osterberg Lecturer. 2014 Recipient In April 2014, in conjunction with the DFI/ADSC Drilled Shaft Design & Construction Seminar, Dr. Kyle Rollins presented the Osterberg Lecture at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center, in Greensboro, N.C. Rollins received his B.S. from Brigham Young University and his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. Rollins has published nearly 150 technical papers and supervised over 100 graduate students. He was recognized as the engineering educator of the year by the Utah State Engineers Council and received the Maeser Research Award at BYU. ASCE honored his work with the Huber research award and the Wellington prize. In 2009, he was the Cross-Canada Geotechnical lecturer for the Canadian Geotechnical Society. Rollins’ lecture, “Deep Foundation Behavior in Liquefied Sands From Blast Liquefaction Testing,” was based on his work conducting a series of full-scale tests using blast-induced liquefaction. Rollins conducted static and dynamic lateral load tests at several sites and developed p-y curves for which provided reasonable estimates of pile performance observed in field, centrifuge and large shaking table tests. Rollins highlighted the results from these tests and showed videos of blast liquefaction, sand boil formation, and Statnamic loading. Following the presentation, Dr. Dan Brown, DFI trustee and 2012 Osterberg Memorial Lecturer, presented a plaque to Rollins. 2015 Recipient Frank Rausche, Ph.D., P.E., will present the 2015 Osterberg Lecture on Thursday, March 19, 2015, 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m., during the International Foundations Congress and Equipment Expo (IFCEE) at the JW Marriott Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio, Texas. Rausche is the founder and principal of GRL Engineers, Inc., and was its president from 1977 to 2011. He received the 2000 24 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JAN/FEB 2015 Civil Engineer of the Year Award and the 2009 G. Brooks Earnest Award from the Cleveland Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the 2003 Distinguished Service Award from DFI. Rausche developed the CAPWAP and GRLWEAP programs, holds five patents and has had more than 50 papers published in journals and conference proceedings. Rausche’s talk, “Load Testing of Deep Dan Brown (left) presents plaque to Kyle Rollins, 2014 Osterberg Memorial Lecturer Foundations: Developments, Applica- tions, Results,” will discuss the rapid development of a wide variety of testing methods to determine the load- displacement relationship of deep foundations over the past 50 years. A variety of load testing approaches with different levels of sophistication now exist, yielding more meaningful and reliable results than could be achieved prior to the advent of reliable instrumentation and computers. The profession has also seen major changes in design methodologies and construction specifications. By describing various load testing methods, their relative cost, benefits and limitations, the lecture will explain how these testing methods can lead to a successful project.
