DFI People and Companies Tom Nichols is now the East Coast regional manager of Geothermal Internat ional Nor th America. Nichols, who has over 10 years of experience working with deep foundation specialty subcontractors, will be working with geotechnical and structural engineers, developers and deep foundation specialty subcontractors to develop the market for ground source heating and cooling integration into deep foundations. Geothermal International has been utilizing the technology under the trade name Energy Piles™ on numerous projects in the U.K. and Europe over the last 15+ years. Tom will continue as the DFI Driven Pile Committee chairman in his new role. Mani towoc Cr ane s named Joe Maslizek as the new vice president of sales for Manitowoc crawler cranes and Grove mobile hydraulic cranes in North America. His responsibilities include distribution management and major accounts management. He reports to David Hull, senior vice president of sales and marketing for North America. Maslizek joined Manitowoc in 2001 as the senior regional business manager for Potain tower cranes. In 2010, he became director of sales and major accounts for Grove and Manitowoc products. Andrew Redfern was appointed as capital equipment manager at Atlas Copco Construction Mining Technique (CMT) USA LLC based in Commerce City, Colo. Since 2007 Redfern has been product manager for Atlas Copco’s Surface Drilling Equipment (SDE) division. He began with Atlas Copco as manager of the company’s rental fleet in the U.S. in 2005. Redfern graduated from the University of Newcastle in Australia with a Bachelor’s degree in geology. Allen Chitty has been appointed to the position of product specialist, Surface Drilling Equip- ment (SDE), for Atlas Copco Construction Mining Technique USA LLC. Chitty was a field technician in the Sacramento Atlas Copco store for almost six years. He served as a trainer for customers and was lead technician on the Folsom Dam project during his time with the Sacramento branch. Chitty’s new duties will include an emphasis on the new Powercrusher line of rock crushers and screeners. Chitty will continue to work out of the Atlas Copco – Sacramento branch. Mike Wentworth is now product manager, Surface Drilling Equi- pment (SDE), for the same Copco office as Chitty. Since 2007, Wentworth was branch manager in Ludlow, Mass. He joined Atlas Copco in 1994 and was promoted to service manager for the Northeast in 2000. In 2005, he was appointed to product support – SDE, and became branch manager two years later. In his new position, Wentworth supports field sales personnel from his New England location. J e f f Do l e z a l wa s appointed to the position of area salesperson for specific product lines for Atlas Copco Construction Mining Technique USA LLC in South Florida and parts of the Caribbean. He is based in Atlas Copco’s new Miami store. Dolezal will be responsible for developing sales and rental opportunities in the south Florida market, as well as parts of the Caribbean market for several Atlas Copco product lines. Elizabeth M. Smith, P.E., has been appointed to the Transportation Research Board’s Foundations of Bridges and Other Structures (AFS30) Committee. Smith is a principal and national program manager for transportation at Terracon, working out of the Austin office. She has 25 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and specializes in bridges and trans- portation projects, and has been with Terracon since 2006. William C.B. Gates, Ph.D., P.E., P.G., is a new senior associate of Jacobs Associates, Seattle office. He is a retired U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret) officer and specializes in geotechnical and rock engineering, blasting and hydrogeology. He has 44 years experience dealing with engineering geology and geotechnical problems worldwide. He developed and published the Hydro-potential Value (HP-value) technique, a method to semi-quantitatively evaluate rock fracture characteristics and predict well yield, specific capacities, seepage and no-flow conditions. Gates is currently the lead rock engineer on Seattle City Light’s Boundary Dam Rockfall Mitigation in Metaline,Wash. Jacobs Associates pro- moted three individuals to the Lead Associate level. Mike McKenna, P.E., is Jacobs Associates’ project manager on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s Silver Lake Bypass Tunnel project and River Supply Conduit Lower Reach Unit 1A pro- ject. Yiming Sun, Ph.D., P.E., has more than 20 years of experience, including design and analysis of highway tunnels, water and sewer tunnels, shafts, and underground facilities for high- level nuclear waste repositories. He is cur- rently providing preliminary design and analysis on the Ottawa Light Rail Project in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
