Seismic and Lateral Loads Committee On behalf of the Seismic and Lateral Loads Committee, I am pleased to report that DFI has published the Seismic and Lateral Loads Design and Testing Guidelines, and the document is now available for purchase and download at www.dfi.org. Congratula- tions to Bob Kruger of CB&I, guideline sub- committee chair, and Zia Zafir of Kleinfelder, past committee chair, for leading the dev- elopment of this important document. The Seismic and Lateral Loads Committee will host a short course on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, entitled, “Practical, Prudent, and Effective Use of Computer Software for Lateral Analysis of Deep Foundations.” The seminar will be the day before the Deep Foundation Institute’s 37th Annual Conference in Houston, Texas. The focus of the session is to provide attendees with the information needed for selection and appropriate application of software for lateral analysis of deep foundations for building support and slope stabilization. I am very excited about this upcoming short course. Tim Siegel of Dan Brown Associates and Wei Zheng of Black and Veatch have done a terrific job organizing the pro- gram for this course and inviting a strong line up of speakers. Please see the conference website deepfoundations2012.org for details. Larry Goldfarb is leading development of a technical document on Point of Fixity issues with laterally loaded deep foun- dations. Other possible technical docu- ment topics may include pile head fixity, lateral group efficiency, p-y curves, downdrag, micropile buckling, battered piles, LRFD factors, and others. If there is anything that you would like our committee to address, please contact Larry at [email protected]. The committee recently developed a proposed revision to the model IBC Section 1803.5.12 regarding the peak ground acceleration to use for lique- faction analysis. Unfortunately, the ICC Code Hearing disap- proved the proposed revision. Mark Petersen, P.E., G.E. Committee Chair [email protected] Thank you again to the committee members who participated in developing this proposal – Enrique Farfan, Larry Goldfarb, Ramin Golesorkhi, Jim Knutelski, Anne Lemnitzer, Jorge Meneses, Ken Sorenson, Zia Zafir and Wei Zheng. If anyone is interested in joining the committee, please contact DFI head- quarters. I would like to gratefully acknowledge the hard work of all the Seismic and Lateral Loads Committee members over the past year. Finally, I hope that your 2012 has been a healthy and prosperous year for you. DEEP FOUNDATIONS • SEPT/OCT 2012 • 63
