DFI Educational Trust Report David Coleman, Chair [email protected] Fundraising Success In July, the organizing committee for the annual golf outing fundraiser in Pittsburgh, Pa., exceeded its goals again by raising over $40K towards the Carnegie Mellon University Scholarship Fund. Led by Seth Pearlman, Lyle Silverman and Jennifer Portaro of Menard, with support from DFI staff and other member volunteers, the com- mittee put together an event where over 55 golfers networked while supporting a good cause. Thank you to the day’s sponsors: ways they can learn from each other and how involvement in their chapter has enhanced their university experience. They also jointly organized field site visits to two local construction projects. Thank you to Posillico Drilling and Underpinning & Foundation Jason Griffin, Menard; Steve England, Bermingham; Frank Kunke, Zueblin; and Rob Wyman, Menard • Diamond Level: Menard/Nicholson Construction Company • Platinum Level: Equipment Corpor- ation of America and Star Iron Works • Gold Level: Brayman Construction Company and L.B. Student Outreach In late May, five students from the DFI student chapter of University of California at Berkeley traveled to New York to meet with the student chapter members of City College of New York (CCNY) to discuss Skanska for providing access and presenting on those projects, 14th Street & Willow Avenue mixed-use development in Hoboken, N.J. and a secant pile wall project at New York University. The Hoboken site had been a manufactured gas plant from 1837 to the 1930s, after which it was used as a gas-holding facility. The extensive contamination from those years is being remediated by the Public Service Gas & Electric and Advance Realty, the owner and developer. Construction is underway on the mixed- use project, simultan- eously with the remediation. The new complex will feature environmentally- friendly aspects, including vegetative roofs, and will seek LEED certification. New Board Member Roger W. Healey, attor- ney, was elected to serve as an at-large trustee for a two-year term ending Decem- ber 2014. Since 2006, Healey has served as general counsel, director, vice president and secretary of Richard Goettle, Inc., a DFI corporate member company based in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has served on the board of trustees and as legal counsel for Kenwood Country Club, also in Cincinnati and was club president from 2010-2011. He attended Ohio University from 1967- 69 and the Institute de Touraine in Tours, France in 1970, where he the first American student to attend the Université de Tours Law School and successfully completed his first year of law school there. He graduated cum laude from Ohio University in 1971 and served two years in the U.S. Army. Healey received his Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Cincinnati Law School in 1976. Since then, he has practiced at several law firms, and joined Buechner Haffer, O’Connell, Meyers & Healey Co., LPA as a partner until 2006. He specializes in construction contracting, business and construction law and construction litigation. We look forward to his participation and new perspective. Scholarship Disbursements In August, the Educational Trust disbursed a total of $70,000 in scholarships to the following universities: Auburn University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, DFI student chapters on site visit in N.J. University of Houston, Carnegie Mellon University and City College of New York. Recipients from each university will be disclosed at a later date and we look forward to their contributions to the industry and participation in DFI as they continue their education in civil engineering/deep foundation construction. The Trust thanks those who fund these scholarships, the DFI members and affiliated individuals and companies dedicated to the DFI Educational Trust mission, “To support and encourage students in the fields of studies related to the Deep Foundation Industry by providing scholarships and opportunities to meet and work with Deep Foundation industry leaders.” Support comes in many forms — volunteer time, donations to the general fund or scholarship funds, attendance or sponsorship of fundraisers, purchase of an “art for the office” portrait, or making your job site available for a tour by students.
