Armin W. Stuedlein, winner of the Young Professors Paper Competition, Seth Reddy, his co-author, with David Coleman, president of the DFI Educational Trust The C. William Bermingham Award for Innovation was the Thermal Integrity Profiler, and Professor Gray Mullins, who helped develop this unique tool, along with Foundation & Geotechnical Engineering, LLC, and Pile Dynamics, Inc (PDI), accepted the award. Mullins gave an address on the creative process that began with his research at the University of South Florida in 2005. The criteria for this award include the “introduction of a new and Daniel Mageau, SoilFreeze, described this ground-freezing project in Miami in a technical session unique practice including means and methods, design procedures and materials by a team or a company.” Mullins and co- developer George Piscsalko of PDI will share the $5,000 prize. The Distinguished Service Award, DFI’s highest award to an individual, was a poignant event for attendees. The winner, Arturo Ressi di Cervia, died in August, after the initial announcement was made. Executive Director Theresa Rappaport gave a heartwarming recollection of Arturo, Gray Mullins (second from left), University of South Florida State, and George Piscsalko (far right), PDI, were recipients of the William C. Bermingham Award for Innovation whom she considered a mentor and a friend. She then presented the brass replica of the Davinci Pile Driver to Dwight Metcalf, of Kiewit Infrastructure, who worked closely with Ressi and summed up Arturo’s character and temperament, and his contributions to DFI, as have others (see sidebar on page 23).
