ISM-ADSC-DFI COOPERATIVE ALLIANCE 12th International Workshop on Micropiles The International Society for Micropiles (ISM), with ADSC and DFI, is planning the 12th International Workshop on Micropiles for June 11-14, 2014 in Krakow, Poland. ISM workshops gather specialists from around the world, and this 2.5-day event will include presentations on innovations and advancements in all aspects of micropile design, construction and use. The workshop will feature the 8th Lizzi Lecture, delivered by long-standing ISM member, Nadir Ansari of Isherwood Associates (Canada), who will present “Micropile Life Cycle - Experiences in Mature Markets and Expectations for New Markets.” The workshop marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Fernando Lizzi, who developed the pali radici (root pile) technology. Dr. Lizzi’s son, Professor Fedele Lizzi, will address the delegation and introduce Ansari. Nadir Ansari Social and cultural activities highlight all ISM workshops, and the preliminary social program plans include a visit to Auschwitz (for companions), a walking tour of historic Krakow and a visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Titan Poland is the host organization, and Jakub Sierant is serving as the local organizing lead. Titan Poland is supported by Ernst Ischebeck of Fried. Ischebeck GmbH in Ennepetal, Germany, ISM Steering Committee member and Lizzi Lecturer, and Dan MacLean, chief operating officer of Con-Tech Systems Ltd., technical program chair. A one-day short course will precede the workshop. ISM Steering Committee members, ISM delegates and specialists from the ADSC-DFI Micropile Committee will teach this course on detailed micropile design and construction. Short course and workshop speakers will highlight local micropile projects, practices and considerations. This workshop will be the second event organized under the ISM-ADSC-DFI cooperative alliance established in 2012. Sponsorship opportunities are available. More information will be available on the ISM website at www.ismicropiles.org as the program evolves. Please contact Dan MacLean, technical program chair at [email protected] and Allen Cadden of Schnabel Engineering, ISM chair, [email protected] for more information. Announcing DFI Journal Vol. 7, No. 1 Micropile World Cup This ISM workshop introduces an international competition to select a World Cup-worthy micropile project. Five regions of the globe will compete: North America; South and Central America; Europe (excluding Russia); Russia, Middle East and Africa; and Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The ISM delegates will vote for the winner during the workshop. Winning participants will receive the Micropile World Cup, to keep and showcase until the next workshop. To qualify, the project must involve micropiles and have been completed in the last three years. Aspects such as the level of innovation, usage in difficult conditions, unique application, and the impact of the project on acceptance of micropiles in the region will be considered. To participate, please submit a one-page summary of the proposed project to [email protected] before December 31, 2013. Experts from each region will select one project as the entry from their region. Authors of each submitted project will be invited to make a 20-minute presentation at the workshop. A paper will not be required, but is welcome. DFI members were sent a link to the recent issue of DFI Journal. A printed version of the 2013 Vol. 7 DFI Journal (2 issues — August/December) can be purchased by members for $125 at www.dfi.org/publications. Here are the contents for Vol. 7, No. 1 • Commentary on the Selection, Design and Specifi- cation of Ground Improvement for Mitigation of Earthquake-Induced Liquefaction • Liquefaction Mitigation Synthesis Report • Grouted Micropiles for Foundation Remediation in Expansive Soil • Relationship between Installation Torque and Axial Capacities of Helical Piles in Cohesive Soils • Ultimate Lateral Resistance of Piles in Cohesive Soil DEEP FOUNDATIONS • NOV/DEC 2013 • 29
