The 2013 Shamsher Prakash Foundation Research Awards were won by Scott J. Brandenberg, associate professor and vice chai r, Depar tment of Civi l and Environmental Engineering, University of California, Los Angeles, and by Adrian Rodriguez-Marek, Ph. D., associate professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. Both professors won for their research in geotechnical earthquake engineering: Brandenberg, with emphasis in seismic hazard analysis, and Rodriquez-Marak for performance-based design of geotechnical structures. The International Association of Foun- dation Drilling (ADSC) presents annual awards to companies that demonstrate commitment to providing a safe working environment. Awards are presented to companies, large and small; contractors, engineering firms, or suppliers and manufacturers. This year there were 19 winners representing U.S. companies, and 3 Canadian firms. Five manufacturer and supplier firms were recognized for their outstanding safety records. At the top of the list is Hayward Baker, Odenton, Md. The firm received the association’s highest honor, the “Rick Marshall Commitment to Excellence in Safety Award.” Case Atlantic Co., Clearwater, Fla., was the recipient of the “Dave White, Most Improved Safety Program.” These awards are named in honor of two of ADSC’s leading safety professionals, Rick Marshall, safety director, Richard Goettle, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio, and Safety Consultant Dave White, now deceased. The Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) selected Lacey Albers as the sole recipient of its 2013-2014 Senior Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholar- ship program awards up to $10,000 to U.S. citizens enrolled in accredited programs in engineering or related fields and planning careers related to the design, construction, or operation of dams. Albers received a $10,000 scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year, as well as a travel stipend to attend ASDSO’s 2013 national conference. She is a senior at Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville. Applications for ASDSO’s 2014-2015 dam safety scholar- ships are available at www.damsafety.org. The deadline for applying is March 31, 2014. Alec Bloem became part of Malcolm’s Ground Improvement Division last year and was recently appointed to district manager. He provides over 35 years of national, as well as international experience, in the heavy civil construction industry. His strong management skills and background in large scale civil engineering projects will provide leadership in growing Malcolm’s ground improvement market. Jon Bussiere, P.E., is now on the Seattle team of Ma l c o lm’s Gro u n d Improvement Division. His P.E. registrations are in Washington, Oregon, and California, and his work experience has recently focused on vibro-replacement, stone columns and aggregate piers pro- jects. Adam D. Hinton, P.E., joined Malcolm’s Northern Cal i fornia project management team earlier this year. His experience includes both public and private work sectors, and the design and construction of deep foundations and anchored earth retention. Jeff Neal is now part of the Seattle project man- agement team. He began his geo-construction career in 2004, and his experi- ence includes varied deep foundation retention systems and excavation support systems projects. Tom Hurley, regional manager, is now part of Malcolm’s Ground Improvement Division in Utah. His 20- year career has been in heavy civil and geotech- nical construction. His knowledge base includes ground improvement engineering in urban environments. The agreement gave Bay Shore exclusive sales rights to Davey Drill products in all states west of the Mississippi. This agreement also gives Bay Shore Systems the capability for sales and service of equipment designed for anchors, micropiles, jet grouting, small bore, hard rock and blast-hole drilling applications. Bay Shore sales and service personnel will undergo an extensive training program to become familiar with the entire Davey Drill product line. Forbes magazine named Atlas Copco number 94 among its top 100 most innovative companies, based on the company’s market capitalization when compared to anticipated cash flows. Atlas Copco was also named a “Leader” in the FTSE4Good Index, which measures globally recognized corporate responsi- bility standards in environmental, social and governance practices.
