DFI Educational Trust Update At-Large Scholarships Awarded In July, the DFI Educational Trust made the first disbursements under its new At-Large Scholarship program. A total of $6,000 was awarded to the three recipients: Eric Hahn, a senior at the University of Cincinnati; Julia Baaklini, a junior at The College of New Jersey; and Jacqui Scibior, a sophomore at Clarkson University, Potsdam, N.Y. of the DFI Journal. The fund will provide scholarships for civil engineering students attending universities in Canada. Patrick Bermingham, of Bermingham Foundation Solutions, has agreed to chair a fundraising drive directed at Canadian firms and individuals. PA Golf Outing – Another Great Year Eric Hahn Julia Baaklini The Trust received 42 applications from all over the U.S., from students attending more than 30 different colleges and universities. The At-Large Scholarship Program awards annual scholarships to undergraduate and graduate civil engineering students studying geotech- nical and foundation engineering at any U.S. college or university. New Scholarship Funds The summer of 2013 saw a flurry of expansion in the Trust’s scholarship programs, as we added three new funds that will be managed as part of the At-Large Scholarship Program. These scholarship funds are still being developed and additional information will be provided in the coming months. Here is a brief summary of the new funds. Through a generous donation of $25,000 from the Heavy Construction Association of Ontario, the DFI Educational Trust established the “Manuel Fine Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund.” The fund honors Manuel A. Fine, who for over 24 years served DFI in many roles including Trustee, President, Executive Director, Managing Editor of Deep Foundations magazine, and in recent years, as publisher Jacqui Scibior In July, through the efforts of John Wolosick (treasurer of DFI and the DFI Educational Trust), and his company, Hayward Baker, the Trust established a scholarship fund in honor of Francis Gularte, a long-time executive at Hayward Baker and accomplished industry leader. The “Francis Gularte Scholarship Fund” received an initial donation of $10,000 from Hayward Baker and a $15,000 pledge from Gularte. Wolosick is currently spearhead- ing a fundraising drive with a goal of achieving a minimum endowment fund of $75,000. At t h e An n u a l Conference, Eric Risberg and Kevin Wi lson, conference co-chairs, announced that Case Foundation Company has pledged an annual donation of $10,000 over 10 years to fund a scholarship in honor of John O’Malley, past chairman of the company, for his 40 years of exemplary service and leadership to the construction industry. The goal is to raise a $250,000 total endowment fund to provide a The Trust’s Pennsylvania Golf Outing held on July 22 at Chartiers Country Club in Pittsburgh attracted 72 golfers and realized net proceeds of $45,000. The annual outing benefits the Trust’s Carnegie Mellon Scholarship Fund, which provides annual scholarships to civil engineering students at that institution. Trust Disburses Record Amount in Scholarships Your contributions to the Trust help young students discover how rewarding a career in the deep foundations industry can be. With the addition of the At-Large Scholarships, the Trust disbursed $90,500 in scholarships so far this year, the largest annual amount since its founding in 2005. With the establishment of the Gularte, Fine and O’Malley Scholarship Funds this year, we hope to reach at least $100,000 in disburse-ments in 2014.
