SuperPile 2013: Register Now Minneapolis, Minn., is the site of DFI’s sixth SuperPile conference; the date is May 15-16. Jeff Gebhard, Braun Intertec, Minneapolis, is the chair of the event, which will offer presentations for seven DFI Technical Committees, all of which focus on pile design and construction. The chairs of each committee help organize the conference, and select the presentations. That process was almost complete at press time, so watch the DFI website for the final program. Hurricane Sandy Presentation Gebhard and his committee have chosen standout guest speakers. One is Gregg Piazza, P.E., Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (MRCE), who will speak about “Hurricane Sandy, Rapid Response Inspection and Coastal Flood Protection.” Piazza is an associate at MRCE and also supervisor of the firm’s structural staff. He will focus on the storm impact within Zone A (coastal) in the New York City Boroughs, and in Hoboken and Seaside Heights in N.J. Many of you have probably seen the dramatic photos of the Seaside Heights rollercoaster in the ocean following the storm. MRCE participated, along with other consultants in the area engineering community, in rapid response inspections immediately after the storm, and are performing structural engineering services for Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, N.J. MRCE is also on a team looking at flood control options around the City of Hoboken on the New Jersey Shore. Don’t miss Gregg Piazza’s eyewitness stories of the storm and the rapid response. At press time, a second speaker was announced, who will also address Super- storm Sandy. Thomas O. Herrington, Ph.D., is associate research professor, ocean engineering program director, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J. He will speak about the Center for Maritime Systems, where he is the coastal protection SuperPile site, the Hilton Minneapolis technical assistance service assistant director, and address possible changes in federal flood maps following Sandy. Register now to attend and to exhibit; SuperPile is limited to 40 booths. For the most current information, go to [email protected] or call 1-973-423-4030. 20 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • MAR/APR 2013
