Drilled Shaft Committee This year’s ADSC-DFI Drilled Shaft Semi- nar will be held in Denver, Colo., Septem- ber 12-13. John Hart at Coggins and Sons of Littleton, Colo., has lined up a solid list of speakers, including Dan Brown, Silas Nichols, John Turner, Vince Jue, Paul Macklin, Mark Vessely, John McCartney, himself and me. The name of this year’s seminar is titled “Drilled Shafts: Top to Bottom,” and will include a wide range of topics. Please contact Jan Hall ([email protected]) for details on exhibiting. Check out www.adsc- iafd.com or www.dfi.org for details and updates as they become available. The committee has proposed a collaboration with the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) to have a technical workshop to discuss the state of practices and their differences. The goal of the workshop is to build a common understanding of design and construction techniques used around the world, in hopes that the best practices from all communities can be blended into a recognized international expression of best practices. Current potential topics include looking at regional differences, design issues, codes and specifications, contract delivery, and construction techniques and quality control. The committee is looking for volunteers to participate as either DFI delegates or to provide technical support for the initiative. Contact James Johnson ([email protected]) or myself if you would like to participate. The joint ADSC-DFI task force on rebar cage design met recently at the ADSC Annual Meeting in San Antonio. Tony Marinucci ([email protected]) and Mary Ellen Bruce ([email protected]) Tom Hart, P.E., R.G. Committee Chair [email protected] are leading the effort. The goal of the task force is to identify rebar cage design issues and develop possible modifications to the current state of practice. The task force will be reviewing existing design guidance from ACI, AASHTO and the FHWA. We would like to work toward producing technical articles or code change proposals. Volunteers interested in tackling existing rebar cage design and construction methodologies are welcome. Our next meeting will be at the DFI Annual Meeting on October 17 in Houston. I look forward to seeing everyone. DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JULY/AUG 2012 • 67
