DFI People and Companies On behalf of DFI’s Ground Improvement Committee, Dan Brown and Associates, PC is executing a state-of-the-practice synthesis on ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation. The synthesis will include a survey of engineers and specialty contractors responsible for the selection, design, implementation and/or verification of ground improvement techniques for liquefaction mitigation in practice. This pro- ject is being funded by the DFI Committee Project Fund, supported with in-kind contributions from Dan Brown and Asso- ciates. Anyone interested in participating in the synthesis, please contact Tim Siegel at [email protected]. Ben Doan, P.E., CCM, has joined PSI as senior vice president based out of its Tampa, Fla., office. He is responsible for building and growing PSI’s geotechnical and construction materials testing service lines in Tampa and Hudson. His program and construction management experience is diverse and includes highways, airport runways and faci l i t ies, commercial and retai l developments, municipal and government facilities, and pipelines and infrastructure. Gary Taylor, L.G., L.E.G., is now vice president of Hayward Baker’s Santa Paula office in California. Taylor has also been named the leader of Hayward Baker’s Western Region Special Projects team, where he directs a team of engineers in the design and estimating of various ground modification projects in the western states and Canadian provinces. In addition, he has also been named a member of Hayward Baker’s Executive Committee. Taylor has been with Hayward Baker since 1988. Prior to his promotion, he was an area manager for the Santa Paula office. He has more than 30 years of engineering design, supervision and onsite project management experience, with special 82 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JULY/AUG 2012 expertise in chemical grouting, compac- tion grouting, cement grouting, soil frac- ture grouting, jet grouting, ground anchors and micropiles. Schnabel Engineering, Inc. (Schnabel), Glen Allen, Va., announced that Dave Campbell, P.E., was an invited keynote speaker a t t h e 4 t h I AHR International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures in Porto, Portugal in February. Campbell’s keynote lecture and paper was “Spillway Hydraulic Modeling – Personal Adventures and Peeks Behind the Curtain,” which included personal reflections on spillway design and how improved communication and greater cross- discipline involvement between academia and practicing engineers have enhanced their performance and cost effectiveness. In April, Schnabel Engineering, Inc. (Schnabel), Glen Allen, Va., received the ASCE National Capital section 2012 Project of the Year Award for its Emergency Repairs for the Jefferson Memorial Seawall project. Since the construction of the Memorial from 1939-1943, the North Plaza and adjacent seawall have been subject to continued settlement. In September 2006, Schnabel was contracted by the NPS to assess the potential causes for the movements. Magnum Piering, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio, hired Matthew Houliston to the engineering and sales staff as support engineer. His responsibilities include installer support, proposals and technical assistance to engineers and architects. He graduated from the University of Cincin- nati in June 2012, with his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. His past experi- ence includes approximately a year and a half of work at a local Cincinnati structural engineering firm. He has also completed coursework in deep foundation design. Mike Heacock has been named vice president of sales for Manitowoc’s Potain tower crane line in North America. He will be responsible for sales of all Potain products, as well as distribution management and major accounts management in the region. Heacock brings with him more than 20 years of experience in the crane industry. Prior to his position with Manitowoc, he worked for 10 years at Coast Crane, most recently as the general manager of the west coast dealer’s tower crane group. PilePro LLC announced that its sheetpile connector range has, for the first time, joined the Technical Product Manual of Skyline Steel, the U.S. subsidiary of ArcelorMittal S.A. the world’s largest steel manufacturer. The new connector range offers greater efficiency and new product dation systems. Walker started his career with the company as a senior project manager in 1994. He quickly rose to the top at Nicholson, from senior project manager to district manager, to vice president of operations, and finally, to president, a role the he has held for the past 12 years. Under his stewardship, Nicholson has experienced strong growth, expanding from a regionally-based $30- $40 million/year company to an organization with annual revenues exceeding $120 million. Christopher Hynes, current executive vice president of operations for Nicholson, will succeed Walker. Hynes first joined the company in 1998, when he started as a project engineer.
