DFI Educational Trust Report David Coleman, Chair [email protected] At-Large Scholarships New Berkel Scholarship at University of Houston The Educational Trust Board of Directors has selected the University of Houston to be the new recipient of an annual $12,500 student scholarship from the Berkel Scholarship Fund. The University is also planning to start a DFI student chapter. The University of Houston is a Carnegie-designated Tier One public research university, serving nearly 40,000 students. The department of civil and environmental engineering offers B.S., M.S., M.C.E., and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering as well as master’s and Ph.D. degrees in environmental engineering. The areas of specialization include structural, geotechnical, hydraulics, water resources, materials and computational mechanics. The other universities that receive Berkel Scholarship Funds are the University of California at Berkeley, University of Illinois and Auburn University. The addition of a new annuity university scholarship became possible when the Carnegie Mellon University Berkel Scholarship Fund program was switched to a standalone program, thanks to the fundraising efforts of DFI Past President Seth Pearlman and the Annual Golf Outing at Chartiers Country Club in Pittsburgh each July. The Trust also manages two other standalone scholarship programs. The Stanley Merjan City College of New York (CCNY) Civil Engineering Scholarship and the Larry P. Rayburn University of Cincinnati (UC) Civil Engineering Scholarship each provide $10,000 annually to those schools and were endowed through donation drives spearheaded by myself for CCNY and by Doug Keller of Richard Goettle Inc. for UC. Following the February Board meeting, and a suggestion by Byrl Williams, Trust vice chair, the Trust Board is preparing to solicit applications for three “at-large” scholarships of $2,000 each from students enrolled full time (at least 12 hours per semester) and pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree in an accredited civil or geotechnical engi- neering or other related deep foundations curriculum. A judging committee will review applications that will include essays highlighting why the applicant chose to pursue a deep foundations-related career. Anyone interested in serving on the judging committee, or receiving an appli- cation, should contact DFI at [email protected]. New Fundraiser We have plans for a joint fundraiser, with DFI, for the spring of 2013 titled “Industry Greats.” This full-day event will feature presentations from giants in the deep foundations industry who will share what they’ve learned during their careers — with ample time for the audience to “pick their brains.” All proceeds will benefit the Trust scholarship funds. The event will likely be held in New York or Chicago. Student Chapter Manual The board, with the assistance Mary Ellen Bruce, DFI technical activities manager, has produced a Student Chapter Manual, a resource for existing chapters and univer- sity students interested in starting a chapter. The manual includes: the benefits of chapter membership, a student chapter mission statement, chapter structure and suggested activities, annual planning documents, scholarship notices, chapter contact directories so chapters can work together, sample activity flyers, sample meeting agendas and an application to start a chapter. To receive a manual contact [email protected]. Clyde Baker: Honorary Board Member Clyde Baker has stepped down as a voting member of the Trust Board but will remain involved as an Honorary Board Member. Baker has an international reputation in the design and construction of deep founda- tions and served as geotechnical engineer or consultant on 8 of the 20 tallest build- ings in the world. He has been an invalu- able asset to the Educational Trust Board. We thank him for sharing his knowledge, experience and his time.
