involving fish curtains, bubbles and gunderbooms. The CRC project has a staff biologist. Construction on both projects is underway, but driven by funding, so completion may well stretch out for many years. The CRC has many ancillary struc- tures in addition to a major bridge, and a projected $3.15 billion price tag. On a different note, Tim Rice, McNeil, Silveira, Rice & Wiley, offered a brief history of construction law, and spoke of schedules, delays, critical path, risk shifting allocation and common difficulties during construc- tion. He noted new issues and complexities with design-build contracts. Rice told atten- dees, “When in doubt, engineers and con- tractors should go to peer review or to mediation, arbitration or other processes such as dispute review boards.” CIDH Piles in Los Angeles As a lot of attendees learned, CIDH means concrete piles placed in drilled holes, a term commonly used in California. Malcolm Drilling’s David DePaco told about a crowded urban site in Los Angeles Resonant pile driver at a rail trestle bridge project in Surrey, Canada where 15 ft (4.57 m) diameter pipes were tipped in such holes, transported to the site with a special rig, and placed with a custom-made lifting frame. The size of the piles was changed after the contract was awarded. Michael Holloway, Dan Brown and Associates, gave a capsule history of testing, illustrated with cases where things turned out “differently than expected,” including one with relaxation in bedrock. Robert Bittner, of Bittner-Shen, presented “Float-in-Installation of a 6,000-ton Coffer- dam over 63 Pipe Piles,” showcasing a current dramatic case history, the Port Mann Bridge in British Columbia. SuperPile offered two tracks on the second day: one was on drilled shafts, augered cast-in-place piles and marine foundations; the other was titled driven piles, testing and evaluation, seismic consideration and micropiles. There were many other excellent presentations, in addition to the few singled out here. All in all, SuperPile 2012 was a winner.
