Often engineers can now reach depths that were unthinkable only a decade ago. The authors, from Soilmec and Trevi S.p.A, describe projects including the Copenhagen Metro, the Arapuni Dam in New Zealand and Wolf Creek Dam in the U.S., to show how obstacles were overcome through improvements in equipment. Small- diameter directional drilling is one example. 77 Energy Pile Research is Heating Up in Texas: Part II Melis Sutman, M.Sc., Tracy Brettmann, P.E., D.GE, and Guney Olgun, Ph.D. A series of field tests on energy piles were conducted in Richmond, Texas, with funding from the National Science Foundation collaborating with Virginia Tech, Berkel & Company Contractors and other partners. The first part of this article in the July/August issue, described test pile installation and instrumentation, and this article continues to chronicle research progress with preliminary test results. FIND COMMON GROUND DFI is an international association of contractors, engineers, suppliers, academics and owners in the deep foundations industry. We find common ground through networking, education, communication and collaboration. Our multi-disciplinary membership creates a consensus voice and a common vision for continual improvement in the planning, design and construction of deep foundations and excavations. Many also believe the method can encourage innovation. Advice is offered about what all participants in construction should know before using design-build, suggesting that training and experience are essential. DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JAN/FEB 2014 • 5
