STILL TIME TO REGISTER Workshop on Levee and Coastal Rehabilitation Practices in Miami DFI is organizing the second Seepage Control Working Group (SCWG) workshop at the Hyatt Regency in Miami, Fla., on February 12-14, 2014. This event includes a 2-day workshop followed by a half day of meetings and training. The workshop is the second in a series on best practices for seepage cut-off projects and focuses on ground improvement/foundation strengthening for levee and coastal restoration. On the last half-day, the second organizational meeting of representatives from a newly formed U.S.- based dam and levee collaborative group will be held, followed by a brief training session on the EFFC-DFI Carbon Calculator. The first day, presentations will be made by federal and regional agencies. The second day will include presentations from practi- tioners, highlighting proven seepage cut-off and foundation strength- ening methodologies. The following topics will be discussed: • Lessons learned and ongoing coastal restoration issues related to Hurricane Katrina rehabilitation • Remediation work projections, building of resilient structures, and policy and building code challenges to the engineering profession following Superstorm Sandy • Levee and coastal risk assessment and restoration issues throughout the U.S. • State-of-the-practice and advancements in seepage barriers and ground improvement technologies for dams, levees and coastal rehabilitation • Current issues related to the national levee safety program, flood insurance programs, agency program plans and infrastructure security • Risk informed processes to support project life cycle cost and risk evaluations, and risk/cost sharing issues in the procurement and execution of extensive levee and coastal reinforcement and rehabilitation projects • Contracting methods and technical quality assurance practices to provide safe, economic, high quality projects Keynote Speakers Eric Halpin, special assistant to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commander on Dam and Levee Safety will deliver a keynote lecture on the new levee safety legislation, followed by Professor Gerald Galloway of the University of Maryland, whose keynote lecture is titled, “Assessing and Communicating Risk about Levees and Coastal Protection - Where Transparency Counts.” Other participating organizations and agencies include National Association of Flood and Stormwater Management Agencies (NAFSMA), South Florida Water Management District, Louisiana Coast Builders Coalition, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Bureau of Reclamation, Tennessee Valley Authority, Office of Infrastructure Protection of the Department of Homeland Security, The Climate Institute, Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2)/FHWA, and Rijkewaterstaat. 22 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JAN/FEB 2014 D F I WO R K S H O P Levee and Coastal Rehabilitation FEBRUARY 12-14, 2014 HYATT REGENCY MIAMI | MIAMI, FLORIDA The SCWG was established in 2011 as a collaborative forum to discuss industry best practices for seepage cut-off projects with the goal of promoting mutual understanding of technologies, appropriate specification models, responsible contracting and procurement processes, and effective quality assurance/control. The first group workshop was held in December 2011 in Deerfield Beach, Fla. This collaboration will generate ultimate benefits to the public and to the entire industry while improving safety and quality and lowering construction risk and project cost. Workshop sessions, meetings and training are open to all attendees.
