EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR UPDATE What’s New? DFI is starting the new year with a few notable changes ... New Magazine Look Let’s start with the magazine in your hands (or on your screen) as you read this message. Following 2012’s expansion of Deep Foundations from a quarterly publication to a bi-monthly publication and an enhanced digital edition, we’ve decided to bring a slightly new look to you in 2013. Consider it a facelift, one that creates a more user-friendly version for readers to navigate their way through the many interesting articles and news items. You’ll see that the cover includes call-outs to the main articles inside, letting you know what to expect before you open the issue. And the table of contents describes the feature articles in more depth, as well as clearly defining the issue’s regular departments. We trust the bold section headings will jump out at you and assist you in getting to the articles that interest you most. Enjoy the issue and let us know what you think with a letter or email to the editor, Virginia Fairweather, who has brought this publication a long way. She takes great pride in both the content and the look of our flagship periodical. New President In 2013 DFI has a new leader in Bob Bi t tner, fol lowing a whirlwind two years of growth and new initiatives under the leadership of President Jim Morrison. Bittner became a DFI trustee in 2005 after two years as the inaugural Marine Foundations Committee chair, and served in both roles for the next three years. He has served in the officer positions of secretary and treasurer preceding his election at the October board meeting in Houston to the office of president. You can read about his plans for his presidential term on page 7. I look forward to working more closely with him to achieve DFI’s goals of global expansion, including more young professionals and students in DFI activities, and committee projects. I welcome Matthew Janes to the executive committee as secretary, and congratulate John Wolosick on his selection as DFI’s treasurer for the upcoming year. DFI Adds Content to OneMine.org DFI continues to add its publication documents to OneMine.org including proceedings, technical manuals, reference documents, DFI Journal papers and magazine articles from Deep Foundations. OneMine.org is a web-based document library where DFI members can access and download over 100,000 articles, technical papers and books from organizations all over the world — at no cost. The web-based document library, which began with the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME), now includes documents from related industry organizations. To access the resources, simply create a OneMine registration. You will need to select DFI as your society of affiliation, and use your DFI membership number when registering. For additional help registering, contact OneMine.org at 1-303-948-4248. New Staff As DFI’s membership continues to grow, we have expanded the DFI staff to ensure we can meet the needs of members, individuals and companies, and that we can continue to manage activities of our committees and trustees successfully. As reported in recent issues, DFI’s event staff now includes two coordinators, Lauren Nance and Erin Groenewal, who work as a team to organize the many seminars and workshops, both domestic and overseas, plus the annual Trust fundraisers. A full time bookkeeper, Lisa Rayment, has also been hired to maintain the financial records of both DFI and the Educational Trust and facilitate timely member transactions. And we welcome Emi l io Fandino as administrator for the Educational Trust’s scholarship funds and student outreach programs, including support of the organization’s fundraising efforts and liaising between the board and myself. Emilio will also provide support for DFI programs, bringing his non-profit leadership skills and legal knowledge to our team. We all look forward to a productive and successful 2013 with the assistance of DFI’s member participation and voluntary efforts.
