ISM-ADSC-DFI COOPERATIVE ALLIANCE 11th International Workshop on Micropiles The International Society for Micro- piles (ISM) gathered in Milan, Italy, for the 11th International Workshop on Micropiles, which marked the 60th anniversary of the pali radici (root pile) technology developed by the late Italian engineer, Dr. Fernando Lizzi. The event was the first organized under the ISM-ADSC-DFI coopera- tive alliance established in 2012. The workshop coincided with GeoFluid 2012, the annual small diameter drilling exhibition held in Piacenza, Italy, south of Milan, in early October. In addition to long-standing ISM delegates from the U.S., Canada, Fin- land, U.K., Germany, Australia and Austria, new delegates from Brazil, Chile, Estonia, Italy, Israel, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Saudi Arabia joined the workshop. Tech- nical sessions covered cultural and regional applications, equipment and testing innovations, research initiatives, successful case histories, and slope stabilization and foundation support applications. ISM acknowledged the generosity of the workshop’s host sponsor, Soilmec S.p.A., and other workshop sponsors (Platinum — Casagrande, Comacchio, Hayward Baker, TEI Rock Drills; Gold — Schnabel Engi- neering; Silver — Equipment Corporation of America; Bronze — Geo-Foundations Paul Woodfield, 7th Lizzi Lecturer, and Allen Cadden, ISM Chairman Contractors). Technical Program Committee members included Allen Cadden (U.S.), Dr. Changho Choi (Korea), Allan Herse (Australia), Dr. Antonio Marinucci (U.S.), Federico Pagliacci (Italy), Mike Turner (U.K.), Jim Bruce (Canada), and Mary Ellen Bruce (U.S.). Paul Woodfield, managing director of Technik Ground Solutions Limited (U.K.) delivered the 7th Lizzi Lecture, titled, “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly (Part 2).” This presentation was a continuation of the entertaining address Woodfield made at the 2006 ISM Workshop in Schro- benhausen, Germany and covered his experiences (both good and bad) working in the micropile industry. On the second workshop day, delegates and companions toured either the GeoFluid 2012 drilling exhibition or took in the sights in Piacenza. ISM’s chairman, Allen Cadden of Schnabel Engineering, served as master of ceremonies for the awards dinner. He recognized outgoing Steering Committee member, Dr. Thomas Herbst, retired, Dywidag Systems International, for his commitment to the success of ISM since its inception in 1997, and his work in populating the ISM’s database of micropile documents. Herbst is succeeded by Ernst Ischebeck of Fried Ischebeck GmbH. Contact ISM Technical Leads Mary Ellen Bruce ([email protected]) and Dr. Antonio Marinucci ([email protected]) to obtain the workshop proceedings, and visit www.ismicropiles.org for more informa- tion on micropile technology and activities.
