Regional Report: DFI Europe The 2012 Olympic Games and the Paralympics in London are history, but all the wonderful memories are still alive. Everybody got a very good impression of the venues of the games, which were constructed in the last few years. Many challenges were overcome by the foundation industry in these complex structures. Even during the Olympic Games, the massive construction activities for the Crossrail London project (almost everywhere in the city) were managed without any effect on the mobility of visitors and athletes. To keep the Olympic spirit going within our industry, we have to achieve our goals and set new goals in a challenging environment. A driving factor will be a sustainable approach on all construction methods and materials throughout the lifecycle of structures with which our industry is involved. A low carbon economy is developing in Europe and new rules, standards and demands are priorities on the agendas. Committees Our Sustainability Committee, which is developing a carbon calculator, chose seven techniques (such as bored piles, diaphragm and slurry walls, grouting, etc.). In cooper- ation with the EFFC, the committee, under the lead of Marine Lasne, had its successful kick-off meeting in Paris. The group made many decisions and held discussions on topics such as carbon accounting methods, emission factors and data collection campaigns. The committee is following up on several tasks. The Moni t o r ing and Instrumentation Committee also met and set up its schedule for the next two years. The guideline for the industry, the result of the committee’s work, will be presented during the DFI Conference 2014 in Stockholm. Co-chairs Rob van Dorp and Hans-Jakob Becker will create the guideline based on risk assessments and safety issues that drive the quality and quantity of the monitoring and instrumentation. Combined Glossary/Lexicon Our Lexicon task group has done a great job in publishing the web-based Lexicon/ Glossary, which is extremely helpful in finding the right items or expressions in different languages. It is a living document, so any comments or proposals will continue to be integrated. Many thanks to Tony Butcher for leading this effort. The Lexicon is based on the English language provided with translations into several European languages, which should be extended to other languages. The DFI Glossary included a lot of definitions mainly in use in the North American region. When the work started on the merged document, sometimes there were no equivalent terms available. Some terms s e eme d t o b e outdated and some are, as far as we can see, not really used in Europe . By introducing this document on the web we hope to discover to what extent terms from other documents are used in other European countries and should be included in the Lexicon/Glossary. Everybody is invited and even chal- lenged to have a serious look at the com- bined Lexicon/Glossary and see if the terms included are used in their countries. The CEN (Europe an Commi t t e e on Standardization) Execution Standard terms are included in the Lexicon and have been included in the Glossary column as well, as far as is feasible. If readers wish to propose changes or additions of any kind, they should be clear as to whether a definition or term comes from an ASTM, a CEN Execution or Design Standard (EC7), a DIN Standard or the ICE SPERW, national standards or specification documents, or any other document. If you have national documents please forward them to the Reviewing Committee lead by Tony Butcher or the DFI Europe Secretariat by e-mail.
