DFI ACTIVITIES Coleman Named 2012 DSA Recipient David B. Coleman received one of DFI’s highest honors, the Distinguished Service Award, in October during the DFI’s 37th Annual Conference in Houston. He was the 32nd recipient of the award, designated for individuals or companies chosen by their peers for exceptionally valuable contributions to the deep foundations industry. Coleman has long served DFI in various positions and is one of the founding members of the DFI Educational Trust. Coleman served as president of DFI in 1999-2000 and has been a member of the Board of Trustees. He was also committee chair for the Publication Indexing and Environmental Committees. Currently, Coleman serves as the chairman of the Educational Trust. Among his many accomplishments so far was the donor drive for the Stanley Merjan CCNY (City College of New York) Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund. Merjan is a prominent engineer and graduate of CCNY who initiated the fund. Coleman was the chair for the Trust’s 5th Annual Gala held in November 2010 in New York City, which raised funds for the scholarship program. In overseeing this effort, Coleman set up the first stand-alone scholarship fund outside of the original Berkel & Company Contractors Inc. Scholarship Fund, and Coleman considers this his most important accomplishment. This model is being used by the Larry P. Rayburn University of Cincinnati Civil Engineering Scholarship effort underway in Ohio. Coleman also worked to create the DFI Student Chapter at CCNY, which began in 2011, and oversaw the new Educational Trust website at www.dfitrust.org (with Byrl Williams) aimed at informing the industry about Trust activities and opportunities to contribute to scholarship programs. Coleman is drilling operations manager with Underpinning & Foundations Skanska, New York. He has been actively involved in specialty foundation construction involving deep foundation construction throughout the U.S. for more than 30 years, and has worked in over 35 states involving deep foundation projects Call for Papers: DFI Journal The DFI Journal, our peer-reviewed publication of high-quality, practice-oriented geotechnical papers, is in its sixth year of publication. We encourage all DFI members and practitioners in the deep foundations industry to publish in the DFI Journal.
